Solved; Case closed. Round up the usual suspects!
[Sherlock Holmes has NOTHING on me, lemme tell ya. But the fire truck will probably be repainted, the light bar fixed or replaced, and in better shape than when it absconded.]

I was on duty one night in Kingwood, Texas and someone jumped into my ambulance and drove off in it.
He was stoned, and was having a delightful time, driving 20 mph down the road, with all of the lights and sirens going, waving to everyone on the road, just like a parade.
The parade ended with the ambulance being surrounded by police cars, (yes, with lights and sirens also). They finally got him to stop and surrounded him with guns drawn until he got out and gave up.
The whole thing was quite a sight for 4:30 in the afternoon.
