Wow. Just imagine a caricaturist drawing rioters with ape-faces today. His home would be burned down, with him and his family inside, with the police watching from a safe distance.

The simian-faced Irishman was Thomas Nast's trademark depiction of "Paddy" who was often depicted with a flask of liquor in his back pocket.

Other minorities did not fare much better in Nast cartoons. The caption of this catoon was "The Ignorant Vote" which implied that the Black Republican vote in the South was the equivalent of the Irish Democrat vote in the North.

Ironically, Nast was himself an immigrant from Germany.....An ethnic group that was not particularly liked in the Union Army where German Americans were disparaged as being incompetents and cowards especially after the XIth Corps' unfortunate encounter with Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Of course, by the 20th Century, German Americans were considered God's gift to the U.S. military.

On a more positive note, Nast contibuted the modern day American image of Santa Claus, the Republican Elephant and the Democrat Donkey.

You may find this hard to understand but I didn't realize that I was Japanese until I went to America as a graduate student. I was born to Japanese parents, and grew up in Japan, but I didn't have a clear identity until that time.

I moved to San Diego, California, in 1983. I was aged 23. I made friends with people from around the globe: Thais, Koreans, Europeans, and Americans. And, to my surprise, through them I was able to see my true self for the very first time. With my yellow skin, black hair and slanted eyes, I realized then that I was Japanese, that I was Asian. I couldn't see that in Japan because everybody else had yellow skin, black hair and slanted eyes. (Back then, young people didn't dye their hair.)

There is no dominant race in Mexico and over 75% of hispanic people in America north of the border are the mestizos a term for mixed-breed; if there is a racial component here or a conception of racism it is coming along with the immigrants.

The government doesn't classify them as a race but it treats them as an economic class which is no better.

The real problem lies in a lack of common goals and a common language.

God is being crowded to the far recesses of our public arena, only allowed to make cameo appearances; whether this is good or bad depends on how people react to it.

Oh? Your German is as poor as your math. In 2000 (four years ago, you see 2004-2000=4) US Census found:

281 421 906 Americans, of whom 211 460 626 (75.1%) were white and no other race. Additional 5 million Americans were combination of white and other race.

Today, America is typically reported to be 69% non-Hispanic white. As for your dishonest criticism of my German, all it proves is that you are either not a German speaker, or you are a liar.

The Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook for 1958 lists the racial makeup of Cuba as follows:

Black..........12.4%
Mulato.......14.5%

During the 1930's, my paternal grandparents and their teenaged children left Cuba for a few years to live in Washington, D.C. where they lived in a white neighborhood. A few years ago, my aunt was visiting Washington, DC and drove by her old neighborhood to see if any old neighbor families still lived there. When she got to the old address, it dawned on her that no whites had lived in that neighborhood for the last 30 years.

Demographic change with time. There was a "white flight" out of Cuba to the U.S. just as there was a "white flight" out of D.C. into the Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

Yep there were plenty of signs saying "Irish need no apply".

Pat Buchanan of today would put up signs "Hispanics need not apply".

Race politics played from the left and the Pat Buchanan right is one word, ugly.

You are linking modern day Cuban demographics.

A majority of the white Cubans....many of whom are Canary Islands descendents are now here. Cuba has hence become much darker since as your CIA link demonstrates.

A irony here is that the minority white Cubans hold most of the Castro derived power in that quasi-marxist nation.

Since 1959 over one million predominately white Cubans have come here.

Another intersting thing about the Cuban gene pool is that there is almost no Amerindian roots left. This is not terribly unusual for the Greater Antilles though some researchers are now discovering that there are some Amerindian bloodlines that survived in Puerto Rico and the Dom Rep....maybe they will discover the same in Cuba.
There are 11 million Cubans on the Island now, I don't know what the population was in 1959 when the waves began.

For the record, I'm quite fond of the Cuban immigration and consider them a plus. They very likely made Dubya President when they and others stopped the closed door recount in Dade County.

I can tell you that the illegal kids do NOT speak English or have any desire to do so. They hang in gangs and cause chaos and disruption. They DO NOT assimilate. They are a drain on our taxes. Ok, rant over.

Too bad Buchanan doesn't just leave "race" out of it --- because he'd find a lot of support among many of our hispanics with regard to immigration. This was an interesting editorial in a border paper yesterday --- written by a teacher in about as close to a 100% school as there is ---

It's interesting when hispanic kids -just 5th graders -- growing up along the border who know what is coming over from Mexico can clearly see the dangers in unlimited immigration from that country but our leaders cannot.
