Gibson's not throwing his movie in anyone's face. No one is forced to see it. Gibson is being targeted for abuse because he has dared to make a movie that presents Jesus Christ as the Son of God, without any irony or ambiguity. Oh, is that so? That's not what I see. What in the movie suggests that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? What in the movie suggests any hint of redemption for sin through the sufferings that are so clearly depicted? Nothing, so far as I can tell. It's a pornography of violence, aimed at people who desperately want their faith confirmed through the softest and most degraded medium ever devised, at the hands of a man whose modus operandus is raw violence in whatever form he can best display it. And the really neat thing (for Gibson) is that he gets the money of people who would rather not participate, but feel they must in order to participate in the discussion. He's a huckster, pure and simple; P.T. Barnum without the family values. Bill Clinton has nothing on him. And the rabid Christian set will stick up for him, even at the cost of distancing themselves from honest and wise men like Krauthammer, because they think that by so doing they're hoarding up brownie points in heaven.

Meanwhile. We as the perennial offenders are considered open season to be offended. Noone of these current whiners ever say squat about that. Mel Gibson knows you though; well enough to play upon you like a Stradivarius.

This movie angers Agnes beyond reason.
To: Agnes Heep
Your anger does no good for anyone, and certainly no good for yourself. You might want to calm down and reconsider your haughtiness.

You know, as far as FR goes, I don't think it's a set. I'd call it damn near universal. I think I need to re-evaluate my faith. Perhaps a reread of most of C.S. Lewis.

I found this on a blog site. It's written by a Catholic named Elinor Dashwood. It makes a lot of sense when she says: "He's famous! He's gorgeous! He's rich! What these star-struck types don't so commonly acknowledge is that He's a schismatic! One serious Catholic after another has succumbed to shivery gratification because Somebody Totally Cool is willing to admit to being a Catholic. "
But actually Gibson is not a Catholic he's part of a schismatic sect.

"... One serious Catholic after another has succumbed to shivery gratification because Somebody Totally Cool is willing to admit to being a Catholic." I think that's the crux of it (if you'll pardon the expression) right there!

Your anger does no good for anyone, and certainly no good for yourself. You might want to calm down and reconsider your haughtiness. When someone stands up in front of a mob and tells them to think things over rationally, I suppose the first thing the mob accuses him of is presumption. It's the way of things.

To: Seeing More Clearly Now
"Gibson has taken much of his account of Christ's death from an 19th century nun who claimed to have seen visions of events 1900 years before her time."
I picked up a copy of her book in the church library once. I read two paragraphs and put it down. It was creepy IMHO. It is strictly her private revelation which no Catholic has to give the time of day.
"The devil character is Gibson's personal editorial of who hangs out with the Jews."
You have hit the nail on the head!
To: Agnes Heep
It's sad that you see Christians and pro-Christians as a "mob" for defending themselves and their beliefs. And my point in my post wasn't that you are presumptuous. It was that your anger doesn't make anything better. But it will hurt you.
I'm not a Christian. But I'm not anti-Christian. I was at one time so I can see your anger for what it is. It's a very popular sentiment among non-Christians. But I got over it. I chose not to suffer from what were imagined demons.
Can you say that Christianity as a whole has been detrimental to society? I cannot. I have friends and family members that are Christians. I will not fault them for their beliefs. I will accept them as they are.
To: Agnes Heep
Mercy, I don't think you're the one who needs to reevaluate his faith! So who does?
To: stands2reason
Can you say that Christianity as a whole has been detrimental to society? Absolutely not. I think somewhere along the line you've missed the bus. I'm not a Christian because of some very minor, but significant points of dogma. The same for Judaism. Both are great religions, informed by a moral code that makes for a good society when that moral code is observed.

Mel Gibson knows you though; well enough to play upon you like a Stradivarius. Who plays you like a Strad dear?
Any secular Jew crying foul?
Maybe some NCC or Unitarian whackjob?
Guess we all answer to different beckonings..I'm quite comfortable with my company.

Yeah, sure, that's on point. /notPithy and funny.
Thanks for that comment because I couldn't figure out its relevance either. Why didn't he just quote the first chapter of Genesis and say "there!"
Your original point was very well taken. Too many people are trying to totally absolve Jews from any responsibility in the death of Christ. In doing so they are parroting some gobbledegook they heard at the local Foursquare Gospel Church -- not the Word.
Furthermore, when the Lord returns, there will be intense grief amongst the Jews for the guilt of that crime due to the fact that they bear a corporate responsibility for it.
