Only the Council can stop it now, and then only by backing down, which they are not noted for doing. If this escalates to a general strike things are going to get very interesting indeed. The army is nominally under command of the secular side, which is the side that just set the deadline. And the army is the key.

I'd prefer the Hard-liners not to budge, it will kill off the reform movement within the government, but will be a strong push towards mass uprisings.

Maybe the mullahcracy will die by coup, not revolution. Either way, they picked a wrong time to try to expand their power.

Oh my, yes it is. How can the governing council back down? Aren't they supposed to be annointed by God or something?

Interesting, but we'll see if any of this is more than just talk....After all, how many times has Khatami said he'd leave?? And how many of the names does the Council have to put back in the "yes" pile, before the reformists back down? A couple?

Great pic.. Ayatollah Khamenei ;)

Yeah, if you're asking about Khatami. His last "I'll step down if the people don't want me" was a month ago, maybe.
He's a drama queen.
