AFN Germany said 'Connolly and Kennedy have been shot.' It was about 8 PM, I was doing some reading for courses at the Univ--Russian history, astronomy. That's all. Didn't know who Connolly was, didn't imagine it was JFK.

He wasn't popular in my part of the country, either but he was the President of my country. The Oswald shooting just about did those of us in the Dallas area in.It just increased the horror and "How on earth could this happen feelings!"This cretin,Ruby, had done us out of a trial and just increased the paranoia.

Dallas suffered an undeserved bad reputation as issued by the media. It wasn't untill MLK was shot in Memphis untill the focus was changed. Funny thing. The torch was not passed to LA one RFK was shot.

I had a conductor on a train in Europe in 1968 jump back in mock fear when he asked where we were from and we said Dallas.
The year we were there in Germany,MLK and Robert Kennedy were both assassinated. It did make you wonder if this would just continue.
Dallas was literally a hated city..it was place to park the anger,I guess.

Hey, you and I are the same age. I had a twin sister who was put up for adoption (or raised by wolves, or something...). Where were you born? I was born in Florida, and raised by liberals.
Could it be?? ;-)

Try boot camp looking for our first weekend pass..... couldn't decide if we going to be locked down or not but they did finally allow us to get off the company compound without a military escort..... I can't remember for sure but we heard about it sometime late that afternoon after we got back in from whatever training exercise we were on....

DALLASGoin' back to Dallas
Take my razor and my gun
Goin' back to Dallas
Man, take my razor and my gun, oh yeah
Lots of people lookin' for trouble
Man, sure gonna give 'em in some
I believe old Dallas
Man, is the meanest town I know
I believe that Dallas
Man, is the meanest town I know
Because you're not safe in Dallas
I don't care where you go
You know that I'm evil
Just wanna have some fun
There's so much shit in Texas
I'm bound to step in some
Goin' back to Dallas
Take my razor and my gun
If there are people lookin' for trouble
Sure gonna give 'em some
I load up my revolver
Sharpen up my knife
Some redneck messin' with me man
I'm bound to have his life
Down to Dallas
Take my razor and my gun
Man, people there lookin' for trouble
Sure gonna give 'em some

I was a kid. The principal came over the loudspeaker and said "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, has been shot and is dead." I will never forget those words.
We were sent home. It was a brilliant, sunny, autumn day, and when I came out of school I could not understand how the sun could shine on such a horrible day. When I got home my mother was watching TV and crying.
It was very scary for a little kid. If the President could be killed, was anyone safe, anywhere? The end of innocence for me.

At the moment of his death, I was a 23 yo spec 4 running the PF course at Ft. Bragg...
Some Sgt. said to me that the man had been shot... and was dead.
I told him to stop trying to be funny... he wasn't trying to be funny.
I came around the track and saw our company clerk purple of face and dying of a heart attack, also about 23. He was a good friend, although for the life of me I can't remember his name tonight.
I'll never forget those couple of minutes in my entire life.
We had just spent the entire summer getting ready to defend Washington, DC against Dr. King's march. That the 18th Airborne Corps was ready to go was never mentioned in the media during this summer's hype.

Do you have 6 toes on each foot? Not currently. Are we supposed to be identical twins? ;-)

...In one year I had lost my mother, the 1st Love of my Life and then suddenly my Beloved President JFK.
...Two short years later found me in the 1st Major Battle of the Vietnam War asking what I could do for my country without any of them.
...It was on the day he accepted his Party's Nomination for President in 1960 that I shook JFK's hand, not washing that hand for 3 Days afterward. From what we now know JFK was really doing that week in Los Angeles perhaps I should have washed that hand after all..?
...In the end JFK inspired us to the Moon before the Communists. For that reason alone we were blessed to have known JFK despite his not being at all what he appeared to be.

My mother told me she started having labor pains that morning, but when the news of JFK's assassination came on the news, they stopped .. I was born 8 days later

Okay, I was alive and more than old enough to remember it well.
I was walking back to my next college class, after having spent most of the afternoon down town, when someone screamed at me : " THEY'VE SHOT THE PRESIDENT ". I yelled back : " SOMEONE SHOT PRESIDENT xxx ? " ( The president of the college )" NO ", PRESIDENT KENNEDY !" " GOOD ! " , I replied and walked on, a smile on my face, amidst a sea of tearful ones.
Harsh ? Maybe, but I hated the Kennedys, still do , and didn't realize that the bloody media, instigated by Jackie and the rest of the hporrid clan, were going to canonize that hapless, inept, dreadful man.
