Again, let's keep this as a fire-news only thread, pretty please? Much as I understand the discussion, I'm more interested on what's actually happening, rather than theories of what should or could be happening. Thanks!

Yeah, but the last six hundred posts on that thread haven't had news; they've had debates of whether Bush and Schwarzenegger should or should not be at the fire zones, or complaints about Gray Davis.

It's no longer a news thread... therefore, I started a news thread.

Deadly Calif. Fires Threaten 30,000 Homes

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ash fell on the beach like snow and drivers turned on their headlights in the smoky daytime streets Monday as wildfires that have reduced entire neighborhoods to moonscapes skipped through the hills of Southern California and threatened 30,000 more homes.

California's deadliest outbreak of fires in more than a decade has destroyed at least 1,100 homes, killed at least 13 people and consumed more than 400,000 acres stretching from the Mexican border to the suburbs northeast of Los Angeles.

The dry, hot Santa Ana winds that have fanned the flames began to ease Monday, raising hopes that overwhelmed firefighters could make progress with the help of reinforcements on their way from other Western states. But the danger was still high. . . . .

Satellite photos available of SoCal region at NOAA website. Don't believe they're realtime, but there's recent images available.

Tonight on KUSI - the weather guy said the Santa Ana winds have all but gone. The winds are very calm. We still have fires at Alpine and Otay Mesa. But .. with the humidity imporving and the winds calming down, this should improve very quickly.

There will be a small resurgence in the morning from the northeast, but early in the day the winds will shift to ONSHORE - blowing the smoky haze to the east toward Arizona by early afternoon.

To the best of my knowledge, they're burning on the western edge of Lake Arrowhead. However, I'm waiting for a current report as to what addresses.
