The entire cleaning industry is filled with immigrants, both legal and illegal. Of course, janitorial work is a low-paying entry job that requires very little English -- it's a natural for both types of immigrants.
If college kids can get illegal I.D.'s to get into bars, how hard do you think it is for illegal immigrants to get the I.D.'s for the I-9 forms that employers are required to keep? But beyond that, since many poorer Americans look down upon janitorial work, immigrants fill in the labor demand. It's a powerful incentive for janitorial managers to not look to closely at the paperwork if they want to get the work done.
I find it interesting that they seem to be deporting the illegal Eastern Europeans when they often don't deport the illegal Latin Americans. It'd be interesting to get more details about the exact nationality breakdown on those caught.

I imagine that the facts will come out in the investigation. Supposing is a dangerous as evidence. We can only go by what is known at present. At present we know that the people were employed by a contractor. To suppose that the contractor is a sub company of Walmart is more silly that supposing the contractor is owned by the DNC. The DNC is using the low cost of labor to fund the 2004 campaign, I suppose ; )

I guess when it comes to Walmart, they are guilty until they prove their innocense. Is that the same for any large corporation?

"Federal lawyer: So what color was the skin of the employees cleaning your floors? Walmart Executive: Brown.

Many of the workers said they were Eastern European
You may be right but chances are the skin color involved is white, not brown.

Walmart cuts corners. I was talking to a supervisor of a snack food operation. The man told me that when packages were "off" weight and had to be disposed of, they sold the short packages to Walmart. When you think you are getting a deal, you may be getting a product that did not make proper weight. I looked at the product this man told me about and there were no notices of underweight product. How often to they do things like that? I do not know.

I think you're on to something there. Wish I could figure out how to relate second hand food to this.

I'd say Adrian.

I only used brown as a response to the other posters here. I get the feeling that they think Walmart only hires illegal aliens from south of the US border.

My wife and I have a cleaning service clean our house once every two weeks. We hired a cleaning company, and they send the workers to clean up everything. This way, we don't have to worry if someone is sick, or on vacation, or whatever. Every other Friday, like clockwork, someone (usually 2 people) comes to our house, and cleans it up. Different people, some speak English, some Spanish. Our valuable things are really big, like furniture, so we'd notice if they stole anything.
Are these people illegals? I really don't know. It's the company's problem, not mine. I don't have the time or energy to try to determine the ethnicity or the worker documentation of these guys, and I'm usually not at home when they're there.
This is probably the same thing at Walmart. They probably don't want to have to hire these guys directly, it's a high turnover business, and probably takes a lot of time. Just hire a firm, and let them do it. They do it for a lot of different companies, so they can do it cheaper than Walmart. Walmart doesn't question who is working there for the other company: they probably cannot ask due to discrimination regulations or whatever. Why you have to worry about a subcontractor's employees is beyond me. Just like the corner grocery store doesn't worry if Oscar Mayer is hiring illegal employees, or if the law firm in an office building wonders if the cleaning crews are illegals. Every cleaning crew I've ever seen has been only Spanish speaking. Why do you think we all write "BASURA" instead of "TRASH" on old boxes we want them to take?

Don't know if I read it here, or heard it on Fox News, but I think *this batch* of illegals were brought in from eastern Europe.
Illegal is ILLEGAL, no matter what the color.....

Also these raids resulting from a 1998 *investigation* ??? It takes 5/6 YEARS for INS to *catch & release* 300 illegals ??? These Wal-Mart raids sound suspiciously like Rush's problem with the drugs. It's like "someone" is holding the cards and is just now showing their hand.

I guess when it comes to Walmart, they are guilty until they prove their innocense. Is that the same for any large corporation? No, corporations and their agents enjoy the same presumption of innocence that we all enjoy. I think that an important fact in all this will be the extent to which these cleaning companies were hiring illegal immigrants. If a significant proportion of the work force consisted of illegal immigrants, I won't be surprised if they find evidence that managers at Walmart knew about what they were paying for.
I don't like to think that Walmart is being managed by fools and idiots, do you? ;-)

Not only are posters clearly blinded by their hate for Walmart, but the story is very skewed to portray Walmart as the hiring company! So it's just hate for Wal-Mart eh?
Wal-Mart is just another company in a long line that is more than willing to sell out the American people for illegal aliens, that will work for third world wages.

(PENNSYLVANIA) 90 illegal Immigrants Found At T.J. Maxx
Times-Shamrock ^ | By Joe Sylvester
At least 90 illegal immigrants who were working at the T.J. Maxx distribution center in Pittston Township were in this country illegally, the township police chief said the federal government discovered.
And officials from U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service haven't finished checking the 700 employee records agents confiscated from the distribution center about a month ago, Chief Stephen Rinaldi said at the township supervisors' meeting Monday night.
He said INS had subpoenaed the employee records with assistance from township police

Yes, and *someone* gave Fox News exclusive rights to film *the big bust* @ one of the stores.

also this statement from a federal employee.....
"Nor will the bureau, a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, seek to prosecute any workers determined to be in this country illegally, agent Lance Payne said."
