I drive an automatic (one day I'll learn to drive a stick, really), so there isn't any downshifting. Still, my car is a junk heap (it's a BMW junk heap, so it's still fun to drive because I can do tight turns at 60) and as such I'm not one to mind a few extra dents. When someone tailgates me, I simply let off the accelerator and very lightly tap the brake pedal -- it isn't enough to make the pads hit anything, but it does cause the brake light to come on as my vehicle slows down. Quite unnerving, at least it seemed that way to the driver of the pickup who decided to ride my bumper yesterday (I was passing another vehicle while doing around 65 in a 55 -- apparently that wasn't fast enough).

I recall reading a statistics study about 20 years ago showing that agressiving driving was highest amongst luxury vehicles. Next highest was higher priced pick-ups. SUV's were just sporty FWD vehicles at the time. Guess those rich people and pick up truck owners have switched to SUV's. My own experiance is that that vehicle that pulls up behind you like a NASCAR driver and blinks his lights as you drive at 80 MPH used to be a Caddy but now is a Ford Explorer. Also I have noticed a lot more women doing this. Second worst offenders are drivers of expensive sport cars, except for Vette owners and modified souped up sport cars for some reason, guess they get their kicks driving on a track.

Have nothing against a SUV, I would consider one if I lived in the country, just can't understand having a 4-wheel drive and never putting the tires on a dirt road, let alone off road. I own a van and a station wagon, they do as well as any SUV with the same features at less cost.

"Ignoring the drooling fools who drive them like they are playing Pole Position, you have the Abercrombies that like to take their shiny new SUVs "off-roading". Most "SUVs" as they come from the factory are built like minivans i.e. utterly unsuitable for anything vaguely resembling real off-road terrain."

Never actually owned an off road vehicle but did borrow a 1945 Jeep from a neighbor of my father-in-law a couple of times. We used it to pick apples on some property he had in the mountains of NC. I would think that a SUV as equipped from the factory has too soft a suspension and tires that are not aggressive enough.
