Henk...

I am a cynic in such matters, and sadly, I agree it may well have been leaked to build support.

"What do you mean those "Nixon left behind"? Nixon wasn't even President when the Vietnam War ended when the last troops left in 1975."

Correct. It was Gerald Ford. The stair case that everyone used, the one on top of the embassy, to board the helicopters is now in the Gerald Ford library.

This (obviously) begs a lot of questions. How and why was Lt Cmdr Speicher seperated from other POWs? Why didn't any of our other captives hear about him during their brief time in captivity and (most disturbingly) what information about him existed during and immediately after the war. It sounds like a conspiracy theory or a bad Chuck Norris film, but someone made a decision to discontinue the search for Scott Speicher after his ejection, and let him rot in Baghdad. That is nothing less than treason.

I hope you are right that this administration is going to do something about it. It has after all had a year. What worries me is that leaking this story on the day Cheney leaves is a great way of firing people up, but its also a great way to get this brave airman killed by Iraq. I would have been much happier to hear about a lightning raid on an Iraqi prison. I hope this pilot sees the end of Saddam's regime and a safe road home.
