OK, let's see if I can explain this better.

The way I see this article reading, I could be wrong, is that the Turkish military is going to cause a stink in Cyprus, this will do 2 things. 1: Help the Turkish Cypriots get what they want, and 2: KILL any chance of Turkey getting into the EU.

This could be totally and completely wrong, because the article is confusing to say the least, but that is what I am reading into it.

On the first point, if Cyprus is unified and allowed into the EU, it cannot be annexed by Greece, which strategically is EXACTLY what Turkey wants. If the Turkish military creates some sort of scene on Cyprus, the Greek Cypriots will do just about anything to get them off the island, short of going to war, so will agree to allow the Turkish Cypriots to have a voice in the government and the guarantees, the EU will be the guarantee that those promises will NOT be broken this time.

On the #2, the Turkish militaries main goal is to protect the Turkish government so that it remains secular and serves the best interests of it's citizens. By becoming part of the EU, it would not be, it would run in the best interest of the EU, Therefore the EU is BAD for Turkey.

The Turkish military Kills 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.

They did between 1963 and 1974, and then it mysteriously STOPPED when the Turks created a neutral zone between the 2. There have been no more "disapearances" since then.

You do not know the Turkish military very well, the only Nato member that has a military bigger then Turkey is the US, none of the EU members even come close. But like I said, this will not escalate to that point. Turkey doesn't want war, they have a goal here, and I think that they can pull it off.

You're right, of course, all these security problems inherent in living in a bad neighborhood are extremely expensive. The weak TL is partly a reflection of the nation's reaction to foreign threats, as the strength of a currency is how we gauge the political stability of the country. In contrast, I am of the opinion that, by projecting national power, a strong Turkish presence in Afghanistan would boost Turkish international prestige. Instead of reacting to problems, Turkey would be proactive in heading them off. This prestige in turn would help political stability and help slow the constant inflation rate. Eventually, Turkish folks could put money in Turkish banks and make money on their Lira deposits, and the entire country would be much better off.

Feel free to paint me as a dumb blonde, because I don't have a clue as to the politics or history of this dispute, but the above accusation which was meant to be detrimental, sounds like capitalism at its best. So what is the problem?

It is basically saying that the EU will control Turkey utterly. Turkey is already pretty capitalistic, so it is not a nice thing to say the least.
