I am frustrated by the euphemistic coverage also. There is a balance between sensitivity and accuracy, and they aren't walking that line. They are not even suggesting the hideous truth.
Correction:
Clearly proving once again how ISLAM and the ignorance it breeds are the root causes of terrorism.
Just for the record.
And one last thing: ISLAM IS NOT A RELIGION OF PEACE.
Now that you remind me of it, I think I had misremembered. I think the mention of stoning of a severed head was made in a thread about Pearl, but that the severed head that it was said was stoned was of one of the victims of beheading in Chechnya.

MINA, Saudi Arabia
The hajj peaked Wednesday with prayers on Mount Arafat, a hill outside the holy city of Mecca where the Prophet Mohammed delivered his last sermon in 632 A.D. On Thursday, pilgrims in white cast seven pebbles the size of marbles at three pillars that symbolize the devil: "In the name of God, God is great," they repeated. The pillars are at the center of giant ramps built to accommodate the huge crowds of pilgrims who must complete the ritual by dusk. Muslim tradition says it was here that the devil tried to tempt the Prophet Abraham to disobey God by refusing to sacrifice his son. "Hajj is very much fascinating. I have witnessed places I had read about for long years," said Mukwana Mohammed, 53, of Uganda. "I also saw the biggest gathering on Earth on Mount Arafat." Muslims around the world on Thursday celebrated Eid al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice, by slaughtering animals and sharing a part of the meat with friends and giving the rest to the poor. |
Palestinian leaders welcomed the Muslim feast with prayers that peace talks will give them a capital in Jerusalem, the third holiest city to Islam. In Indonesia, the world's most populous Islamic nation, blood ran in the gutters in front of mosques as the faithful slit the throats of cows, goats and lambs while chanting prayers. Hard times toned down celebrations in Iraq, where sanctions imposed after its 1990 invasion of Kuwait have pushed the middle class into poverty and widened the gap between rich and poor. "We have no Eid. For us we see it only in the calendar," said Atheer Ahmad, a government civil servant. For pilgrims in Saudi Arabia this year, most of the animals will be sacrificed at a new $125 million slaughterhouse in Mecca. Pilgrims can go to slaughterhouses to buy and slaughter animals themselves or they can pay a bank or company to do it on their clients behalf. Meat is sent to the needy in 27 countries. Pilgrims arrived Thursday at Mina from Muzdalifah, where they had collected pebbles for the stoning ceremony. Wide streets along three-mile route were a sea of white. Many pilgrims walked; others crowded inside and on top of cars, buses and trucks. Vendors filled the streets selling food, prayer rugs and umbrellas to stave off the sun on a 100 degree day. Helicopters hovered overhead and ambulances and police cars patrolled the streets to ensure calm. So far this year, the hajj has been free from large-scale disasters. Six Palestinian and Jordanian pilgrims were crushed to death last week inside Mecca's Grand Mosque. This week, two women from the Russian republic of Dagestan were killed in a bus accident; a Kuwaiti boy and his parents died in a car accident. Hajj - one of the most sacred duties of the Muslim faith - is required at least once of every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. This year, 2.1 million people are taking part in the hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. There are more than 1 billion Muslims throughout the world. Pilgrims will also circle the Kaaba, a cubic stone structure in Mecca, to which Muslims around the world turn for prayer. After completing the rituals, pilgrims clip some of their hair. Some Muslims shave their head, imitating Mohammed, who shaved his head after his pilgrimage. |

Mecca/Cairo
Each of the vast throng moving from Wednesday's solemn pilgrimage at Mount Arafat to the nearby town of Mena is required to throw seven pebbles at three pillars, symbolising Abraham's rejection of Satan's attempted interference with God's instructions to sacrifice Ismail. In the ensuing feasting, some 400,000 sheep plus thousands more cattle and camels were being slaughtered - most of the meat being flown out by Saudi Arabia to poorer countries to enable Moslems there to be indirectly involved in the pilgrimage. After the feasting, the pilgrims were to end the hajj by shaving and cutting their hair, then once more - as at Tuesday's start of the ritual - walking seven times round the Kaaba, the cubed structure believed built by Abraham, and to which Moslems direct their prayers. |
The pilgrims, clad in the ihram - two unstitched and seamless pieces of white cloth symbolising a funeral shroud - had observed the hajj climax Wednesday at Mount Arafat. Their station at Arafat has been interpreted symbolically as a foretaste of the Day of Judgement at the site where the prophet of Islam, Mohammad, gave his last sermon 14 centuries ago. This year's hajj - with a record number of pilgrims - has been seen as one of the most secure and peaceful ever amid stepped-up safety measures. Saudi authorities have spent huge sums in efforts to prevent tragedies like those in 1994 and 1998 when 270 and 180 people respectively died in stampedes. Authorities installed in Mena more than 40,000 fire-proof tents with air-conditioning, and banned gas cylinders which were blamed for the 1997 blaze that killed 343 people. Some 10,000 doctors have been working around the clock to attend sick pilgrims. The slaughter of the animals was taking place this year in the world's biggest slaughterhouse. The 500,000 square-metre complex near Mena was inaugurated this year at a cost of 125 million dollars. Animal welfare activists argue that animals are subjected to needless cruelty, taking minutes to die when they have their throats cut and are left to bleed to death, as required by Islamic ritual. Elsewhere in the Moslem world, the Eid al Adha festival was also in full swing, with around a million sheep, cattle and goats being slaughtered in Cairo alone. From sunrise - at sites varying from street corners to underground garages to balconies to stairwells in apartment blocks - the slaughter was going ahead, with children joining their elders in stepping through the blood in expectation of good fortune. In another custom believed to bring good luck, people leave bloody hand prints on house walls and the windows of business premises to protect them from the "evil eye" of others' envy. The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam which should be performed by every able Moslem at least once in a lifetime. |
