As much as anything else, it will add a small piece of backbone stiffener to the good guys, and maybe put 'em on notice that WE expect better from them.

The fact that Billy Jeff(patui) spent two terms in office does not reflect well on the people that vote Dim. They are for the most part a coalition of "created victims" that don't care one way or the other what their benefactors do so long as they get their handouts and other goodies.

You've seen the statement(I don't recall who said it) about a democracy will last only until enough voters discover they can vote themselves money from the public largesse. Robin Hood comes to mind.
