And a lot of them (especially out in the suburbs) absolutely hate it when you call them a "union". They like to call themselves a "professional association".
A year or two ago, a teacher (ahem, I mean "educator" - they prefer that too) complained to the local newspaper here about it being called a "union". Suprisingly, the paper stuck to its guns and continues to call them a union.
Now, in the cities, especially in the Northeast, they don't care if you call it a union. I remember a rally in Philly a few years ago with a hall full of teachers chanting "union, union, union".
