Those factory workers didn't have welfare back then and were willing to pay for college for their own children ---unlike the immigrant today ---at least many of them. In the area I live, we have very high illegal immigration, a 38% dropout rate---not even high school because many drop out in middle school. The teen pregnancy rate is extremely high and the housing projects are full of illegals. A little different than the past when the immigrants had different values and strived to be educated.

Is it my imagination, or do we have more racialist posters of late?

Unfortunately one of the side effects of 9/11 was to bring the Kloset Klukkers out from under their rocks.

But they are sending us an endless supply of people they don't want. It isn't our gain when those people end up in housing projects and add to a high illiteracy rate here in the US. We now have to offer a Spanish GED because they don't care to learn English or finish school around here.

Maybe you haven't seen the conditions of the border counties lately. They've been declared an economic disaster and are in need of large amounts of federal and state dollars. If immigration was really wonderful for the economy, it should be a different story.

Was the founder of Operation Blockade a racist hater and were the people who elected him to Congress because they believed he was helping their area by limiting immigration and enforcing the border nothing but a bunch of bigots?

Really? Will this ultimatly be any different than the Israel lobby (whose supporters dominate the Democratic Party in South Florida and vote 85% Dem nationwide) lobbying to send my tax dollars to their country. What about the Greek, Armenian and Cuban lobbies? I think middle eastern immigration will be good for our foreign policy, as it will ultimatly make it more balanced than what it has been. Powerful and incisive commentary.

As someone pointed out very early in the thread, the same was true of Irish and Polish immigrants a hundred years ago - where do you think all those "dumb Pollock" jokes came from?
As for the welfare state, note that those people who shout "Libertarian!" everytime someone brings up the free market or individual freedom should note that only one political party is calling for the complete abolition of the welfare state.
And it's not the GOP.

I guess you've haven't been here a while - I'm not a leftist by any means. I am mainly libertarian in outlook.

I thought it was just me. This seems to be particularly true on threads having anything to do with constitutionality. Its amazing how this topic always seems to generate accusations of racism and ultimately, anti-semitism. As if one cannot be concerned about America without FIRST being racist and anti-semitic.

2 Issues here:
1. Although I do believe in expanded social services (No, I'm not a Socialist) I'll agree that no money/services (except basic health svcs.) should be given to illegal immigrants. Federal/State/Local help should go to Citizens/Residents who need it. (Like my wife, who after many years as a taxpayer is now an Enron ex-employee)
2. Those millions of hard working Americans are not loosing their jobs to illegal immigrants, they are loosing them to overseas work forces. Ask Mr. Ford why they're moving manufacturing to Mexico and he will tell you that they are made cheaper so when they bring them back and sell them in the US they can make more money. Is called Globalization. We design it, they make it , we buy it.
Is a very difficult balance. Americans want their SUVs bigger and their Gas cheaper... Are you willing to pay an unionized oil worker $35/hr. or more to produce oil in the US? Pay between $5.00 and $7.50 per Gallon? Most Americans do not.
I do feel sorry for those who can not afford education and even more for those who think they don't need it... the future is going to the very hard for them.

Who is Petronksi? Your imaginary friend who also supports Pat's views?

Is called Globalization. Huh? Mr. Ford was the one who shoved nafta and gatt down most Americans very unwilling throats? Patience hell, I'm going to hunt him down and throttle him .... oh, I'm too late, you say.

Wow. You have proven the old saw about throwing a stick at a pack of dogs: the one that yelps is the one you hit. Sorry 'bout that.

The pitchfork brigade is a tiny minority stuck in the past. The mainstream of America accepts people for who they are and not where they come from. Unfortunately, the Right has to fight off the perception that they are racist bigots who want to return to segregation because of the ignorant Buchanan's of the world.
