... and today, President Bush's private life is once again his own, his exotic youthful peccadilloes ignored by a somewhat shamed press.

Stupid question: what exotic youthful peccadilloes?

Any Public official who thinks he is so damn important that he should be exempt form the laws that apply to us mere peons/citizens and that while in court he is entitled to lie, is unfit to hold any office of any kind.

Sorry, I disagree, if a person cannot trust his or her spouse, why should the public trust them.

Lyndon Johnson, likewise, bedded interns, staffers and students with impunity - his wife Ladybird admonishing anyone who raised an eyebrow. The press, in such cases, was fully aware of such behaviour. Indeed, journalists themselves sometimes partook of such offerings. But in their newspapers they turned a blind eye.

Isn't this the same Lyndon Johnson who led us to death and humilation in Vietnam. I guess he was too busy "getting his" to count the body bags. No wonder Vietnam was such a disaster. God was so far away from us, we made the Viet Cong look like King Kong. Thank God we didn't get into a major war with Clinton at the helm, it would have been an unmitigated disaster.

Please tell Nigel that his view on the measures of fitness for public office have undergone an eight year test and been found wanting.

Hamilton deliberately makes it seems as though he knows that LBJ bedded interns and students. If these liaisons have been documented, I haven't seen it. It is alleged that Clinton himself told a story during his Oxford years about LBJ making love on the presidential seal in the Oval Office, but this self-serving story only came out after the Lewinsky scandal broke. As we all know, Clinton did everything possible to stain the reputations of the Presidents who came before him in order to make his own actions look less reprehensible. So if Hamilton, a biographer of Clinton, is using Clinton as his source for these charges, obviously that's not enough.

I don't doubt that Johnson was not as pure as the driven snow. In fact, just a few weeks ago I heard a repulsively treacly conversation between LBJ and Jackie Kennedy recorded after Nov. 22, 1963 in which Johnson's pathetic attempt at lighthearted flirtation sounded more like a dirty old man drooling over a hooker. But I would still need to see documentation, corroboration of some kind, that he seduced "students and interns" before I put stock in the word of a Clinton toady like Hamilton.

"It seemed as if, finally, politics had triumphed over media trashing."

Actually, the media did everything in its power to save, promote, nuture Bill Clinton. Don Hewitt orchestrated that interview and later claimed to have elected Bill Clinton, for him that was a positive. The trash was Bill Clinton and his Famiglia, not the media. It's too bad the media never trashed Bill Clinton, even to this day.

Alan Derschowitz, the famous American lawyer, considered the trial of the President to be "sexual McCarthyism" - and he was right. He should be referred to as infamous. I do not think there is an innocent person he has ever defended.

The Dean of Harvard Law should remind him also that Geraldo apperances and Court TV slots are not counted as research publications. Go back to the library, Alan, do some work.

Hamilton's attempt to place presidential hankypank on the same plane of regard as Hollywood hankypank is pretty silly. True, randiness is no impediment to an actor, but Clinton's sad history in office surely demonstrates the price a nation pays when its CEO consistently neglect heads of state for head.

In fact, as I think about it, what Johnson and Kennedy and Clinton all have in common - in addition to their crude womanizing - is an abysmal record as Commander in Chief of our nation's armed forces. Curious that Mr. Hamilton fails to see a connection there. Most women I know know instinctively that any man preoccupied with chasing skirts is a man who isn't taking care of business...

Public officials 'have strong libidos', meaning no self-control. In Clinton's case, many would agree that had they been publicly caught doing this at their place of business they would have been terminated.

Niggle does bring up one interesting issue: who is outed and who is not. Remember that it was Larry Flint's blackmail threat to Congress of outing many of them if they kicked out Clinton.

So why was Clinton outed? Did he disobey his handlers? Was this a very needed diversion?

Politicians, male and female, often have strong libidos

----------------------------

Their libidos are no strong than mine has been most of my life. The difference is, they don't give a damn what they do or who gets hurt.
