What does gramscian mean? Are you referring to the Italian Communist?
The compartmentalization of existence is the top story (as we journalists say) of the last few centuries. Ironically, the fact that it's happening prevents it from being seen by the masses, although it's obvious to the non-conclusive thinker.
It's the reason for the trends in modern art; compare the old "story" paintings with impressionism, cubism, Pollock, Mondrian and Rothko, and modern music; from classical to jazz, rock and rap. And it bestrides the narrow world of politics and social behavior. "Thing A has nothing to do with Thing B" recently won the social argument of the century award, is accepted by both major political parties, and is the definition of the Libertarian Party.
Do you really think a change this fundamental in the human psyche can be attributed to marxist/lenninists, or any other group?
(But ... then again ... I had you pegged as MAD about Barbership Quartets so what do I know?)
I guess I'm just thoroughly impressed with the attention leninists pay to every detail -- from sexpol, to education, to "art for art's sake", to music, to drugs and, above all, to the control of language.
Leaving aside the clear and present evidence of the Long-range and decidedly Worldwide scope of their drug and terror cells, I think the case can be made that -- cell by cell -- they've sought to raise consciousnesses worldwide. As part of their gramscian "revolution from within" ... they've attached themselves to those structures -- Catholic sees, tenured faculties, Third Way groupthink-tanks -- from which they can can best grow right over and distort the existing order as they suffocate it to death.
P.S. I consider it not so much a fundamental change in the human psyche but a systematic destruction of the human soul. Bodies that move when the soul has fled (or been bent so that the life's sucked out it).
Anytime you divest human faith of human reason or human reason of human faith, it's going to produce aliens (and alienated) of a sort. So the human psyche (which operates best on BOTH) remains the same.
That said ... I think militant atheism as practiced by the communists is a slightly different animal than the merely sere and devoid of substance minds produced by "neo-pagan" or "deist" sorts of modernist rationalization.
I got a really cool art survey book on Sunday concerning Russian art between 1914 and 1917 ... like nature's red claw or Ibsen's "Dollhouse", the dreamers do generally portend the turn of events. Perhaps you'll see better what I mean when I scan some of that as a window to the significant spiritual horror already established and spreading in Russia by 1879.
Indeed, I am very angry about their clean-cut image. I had a bad experience, before asymmetrical haircuts became popular.
As a rank anachronistic anti-communist and all-purpose Wack-Job, I'm used to being fluffed off. =)
The Soviets and Chicoms are only doing what they said they'd do. It's not like I'm an oracle by any means.
I just pay attention to what's said and -- indeed -- do respect their horrifyingly adroit achievement of long-term strategic objectives despite the drama of the dialectic they use always to lever the "lesser evil" Pragmatists this way and that as suits their purposes.
