Here is the cover story in today's NT Times Magazine. The most interesting part of the article is the section on Hamburg, Germany where the terrorists are the most free to act with impunity at least until recently.

It's a long but surpisingly good article.

It's statements like this that make me wonder if Powell is smart enough to handle or have input into this situation. Would this come under comprehension problem or inability to reason in the abstract?

The good news is that the light of day has illuminated all of this suddenly as a result of the tragedy. If there ever was a silver lining, this is it. The media should be on top of this, and invite these immans, or their spokesmen/apologists in the US to explain themselves, and answer some tough questions. If they refuse, that should be pointed out as well. This in an important issue for the public square on all sides to hash out in the open, even if some get bruised in the process. That is far better than letting this matter fester, and ripen and metasticize in the dark recesses. JMO.

Okay, here's a selection from recent discussions between Moslems and Christians and Jews, taken from an essay by someone at Georgetown U.:

" In the Second Special Assembly for Europe, Archbishop Giuseppe Germano Bernardini, O.F.M.Cap., Archbishop of Izmir, in Turkey, spoke on "the problem of Islam in Europe today" (L'Osservatore Romano, November 17, 1999).

"I will make mention three cases that, due to their provenance, I believe to be true," he said.

1) During an official meeting on Islamic-Christian dialogue, an authoritative Muslim person, speaking to the Christians participating, at one point said very calmly and assuredly: "Thanks to your democratic laws we will invade you; thanks to your religious laws we will dominate you..."

2) During another Islamic-Christian meeting, always organized by Christians, a Christian participant publically asked the Muslims present why they had not organized at least one meeting of this kind. The Muslim authority present answered in the following words: "Why should we? You have nothing to teach us and we have nothing to learn." A dialogue between deaf persons? It is a fact that terms such as "dialogue", "justice", "reciprocity", or concepts such as "rights of man" and "democracy" have a completely different meaning for Muslims than for us. But I believe that by now this is recognized and admitted by all.

3) In a Catholic monastery in Jerusalem there was ... a Muslim Arab servant. A kind and honest person, he was respected greatly by the religious, who in turn were respected by him. One day, he sadly told them: "Our leaders have met and have decided that all "infidels" must be killed, but do not be afraid because I will kill you without making you suffer."

Are these words anything more than naive or even "extremist" Christian reactions? The Archbishop added: "We are all aware that we must distinguish between the fanatic and violent minority from the tranquil and honest majority, but the latter, at an order given in the name of Allah or the Koran, will always march in unity and without hesitation." "

Obviously, that is a downer. Let the dialogue continue. Talk, talk, talk. Thesis, antithesis, and with luck, maybe synthesis. Yes, it doesn't look too good right now. The sword will no doubt have to continue to be used for some time. Perhaps that will concentrate the mind that the old mind sets are folly. That road can only lead to the black hole.

"As Powell should be aware"..............Well, there is ALOT that the Secretary of the U.S. State Department should be aware of..............(the most primary being that Israel is the ONLY loyal friend of the U.S. in the middle east).

The scope of the current threat to the United States is actually as broad as the entire Islamic world. Only when the fanatics have completed their desire to use portable nuclear weapons against American cities will the Washington political establishment admit to the depth of the current threat. Unfortunately, many of us will die before the control of the 'enlightened ones' over our national destiny is reduced.

It's time to make some wiser moves in foreign policy. Drop all sanctions on Iraq, and encourage them to retake Kuwait, while we, in alliance with Japan, take Saudi. From Saudi we can broadcast rock music and reruns of Baywatch into Iran, while we turn Mecca into a Disney theme park, built around a towering statue of Lawrence of Arabia.

Let the Israelis drive the Arabs back across the Jordan, if that their heart's delight, and encourage India to remove the nuclear threat on its western border.

We ought also raise a volunteer anti-slavery brigade to invade the northern Sudan. All those now locked up in any US prison would be offered the chance to enlist, but not allowed to re-enter the US until that date when their prison release would have come.

A nuclear sneak attack on North Korea, and the assassination of Castro would also be in order. In a couple of months the world would be a better place.

Thanks. But not much chance such policies will come to be. Our president seems to prefer the pen-pal approach to war.

Or maybe Far East Texas. I doubt that the Saudis are as nice and friendly as those in East Texas.
