Hi Paul, Christ Bless! Getting ready for Lent? We've just found a new Church closer to home that will allow us to attend weekday services, thank God. It will be our first time attending services regularly at a Greek Church. The one downside about being Orthodox in America is certainly the sparcity of parishes. WS Hi, back!
I have to drive 30 minutes to get to church (16 miles).
Our parish membership extends about 30 miles in all
directions even though there are around 10 canonical,
english speaking parishes in the Portland area!

Why would you think that? You described the roles of the Holy Apostles in the Apostolic Council admirably. Exactly as the Orthodox describe them. Now, just extend this to later Church councils: the bishops met in council, the Emperor or an Imperial appointee presided, but the council of bishop pronounced judgement as to what the faith once delived to the saints was (not should be, was). The legates of the Bishop of Rome (or the Pope himself at the one Ecumenical Council he attended) had one vote each, the same as all other bishops.
Once again, briefly, I don't believe this "corruption" was an immediate process. It took time, somewhat in the same way water makes it's own path. By the time of Luther (and I am no particular fan of him as an individual) the RCC had become extremely corrupt.
I do; however, believe this process began with the advent of the power and wealth of Constantine. (That is why I constantly tell SD his Church is the "Church of Constantine.)
Are you aware that several RC's on this forum still insist that "Pope" Innocent gave his "approval" to the canons of the Council of Nicea and that is what gives it it's authenticity?

Let's see.... at a six percent daily growth rate.... and taking Sundays off....the chances will double about every two weeks. If you started with only a 1% chance... that's means you reach certainty of divorce around the beginning of June (you have to allow for potential adjustments for unexpected gifts, anniversaries, new horses, etc...) Will you need a place to stay? Or will Mack?
Maybe you would be better off if you started at "0". Then Mack could screw up and double the chances without any long term damage :)
Go easy on the guy. Once you get that AARP card your prospects start to diminish. BTW - When do we switch from "Big Mack" to "Old Mack"?

The one downside about being Orthodox in America is certainly the sparcity of parishes. WS I'd put it another way. The biggest reason we have little impact on our country is that we are INVISIBLE.
Most of our RC and NC friends here know 100x as much about our church as the average deeply committed NC or RC believer!

I think we all need to make allowances for someone who goes by the moniker of "OLD REGGIE"! ;-) You have also certainly proven yourself willing to apologize if told that you've been out of line. Haven't seen any such sign of humility from Isaiah_66_2. I try to refrain from comments that reflect on a person's character rather than on the character of their arguments. I just think that it's good manners. Not that I'm perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, or want to push my personal standards on others. My wife and I try to treat the kids the same way. We'll say, "that was a stupid, idiotic thing to do!" instead of "you stupid idiot!" The only "judgemental" name I'm more than willing to call someone is "sinner." After all, aren't we? Off for the night. God Bless.

We're 65 miles, an hour and 20 minutes, from our "Church of choice." Just discovered that there's a Greek Church that doesn't go too heavy on the Greek only 40 miles and 50 minutes away. This even in "Orthodox-heavy" Massachusetts. Got spoiled when we lived around the corner from a mission Church we were helping get started in Colorado. I try not to complain, though, ever since meeting a family in Colorado that would drive 4 hours or more every weekend from Kansas to go to the closest Orthodox Church. I'm sure I wouldn't have that kind of dedication! God Bless.

I'd also like to see us refrain from taking the Lord's name in vain as we joke with each other. I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to, but it certainly sounds like a good policy especially considering the number of lurking "religious seekers" that are likely to be watching. I try to refrain from saying, "Geez," even though its an old habit, because I don't think it shows proper respect for the name of Our Lord.

Paul, a fellow Orthodox Christian, is making the valid complaint against our Orthodox Church that it is weak in reaching out to Americans because it is too hidden. My own Archbishop has accused his own flock of believing they should stay safe in their "ethnic ghettos." Typical American immigrant behavior, since most Orthodox are newer arrivals to this country, but not right spiritually. This is often a source of tension between the large American convert population in the Orthodox Church (especially among the clergy) and the Orthodox laity that is guilty of thinking of the Church as a bastion of their ethnicity first and a bastion of God only second.
You, and the rest of the participants on this thread, probably have much more knowledge of the Orthodox Church than most of the committed "NO" (non-Orthodox) Christians in America. That is our own failing, and one that IMO the committed Orthodox are trying to address. I've had one RC poster here tell me that before starting on this thread a few weeks back, all she knew about the Orthodox was that we crossed ourselves backwards and what she learned from Dr. Zhivago. Its one reason that I feel that it is pleasing to God for me to participate here, in addition to improving my ability to witness and debate. Christ Bless.
