they may have to scramble to cut their budgets by $28 per student if lawmakers don't agree to increase the state tax on cigarettes and liquor by July 1.

I thought our state Lottery/Lotto was supposed to be the end of all education woes? Wonder where those bucks are going to........

When all else fails, blame it on us smokers! Next thing you know, they will target us gas and booze consoomers! What? You tellin' me they are now considering raising the taxes on booze and gas here in our lovely state of Michigan? Say it ain't so!

Since my car gets 35 MPG and none of you anti-smoking SUV driving, beer drinking lugs never came to the defense of my tobacco smoking, you ain't getting any sympathy from me! ROFLMAO!

What goes around comes around! LOL!

Here's some advice for you nico-nazi's, just do what I do, order your gas and booze from an out of state Indian reservation! HaHaHaHaHaHaHa...........

The Lottery did contribute 11 million dollars last year to the school aid fund. But here is the tricky part about that: The school aid fund is usually dispersed on a per student ratio. The monies collected by the lottery are not dispersed in a county according to how much money the lottery has collected in that county. For example, Kent County was the 3rd ranking county for money raised by the Lottery last year, but they we the 12th ranking county in funds collected by school aid.

I own a chain of Convienience Stores on the West and North part of the state. I don't like the proposal one bit either.

Based on the 2002 hike of $5.00 per carton, my cigarette sales declined by 30% and overall store sales by 12%. It caused me to close 1 store and layoff 20 employees.

Here is the problem. People are smart. They know that they can buy a carton of authentic Marlboro's over the internet for $25 per carton or buy a carton in Kentucy for under $20 per carton. I make it a point to interact with customers every day and they are telling me that they enroll in auto-ship programs from internet suppliers. They don't even have to place an order every 2 weeks, and they are saving hundreds of $ per month. Now how can the state collect their excise tax on those purchases? Our legislators are flushing our money down the toilet. Hiking this tax will hurt our economy in the long-run.

Ohh, yes. Anyone every hear of the MSA. It's that settlement agreement that the tobacco companies pay the state every year. It's based on volume sales. When we decrease the volume flowing through Michigan wholesales the tobacco companies pay the State less money.

GRRRRRRRRRRR.

Kuksool:"Yawn. Typical RAT tactic. When the RATS can't get the tax increases they want, they spread rumors about government education suffering. The problem is, the people fall for the con everytime."

At what point will it be cheaper to smoke dope than tobacco?

The Lottery did contribute 11 million dollars last year to the school aid fund

When the lottery was first implemented, it was approved based on the premise that every single dollar raised was to go to education...........

Just like every dollar won through the tobacco settlements were to be divied out to the states to augment the alleged "rising cost of healthcare due to smoking ailments" and to implement state funded stop smoking programs.

Being a smoker who has contact my state to inquire into such "state funded" stop smoking programs, there is no such program available!!!
