Ruby Sharum was attacked late Friday night by a pit bull owned by her great-grandson...

The owner does not want the Rottweiler euthanized, Markley said.

This person is extremely dangerous.

S**T! Imagine getting to 91 and having this happen?

F**ing dog owners of any breed that is aggressive. You can bet 100% that the owner has been spoken to by his/her neighbors many times. The Pound cannot act unless someone reports a bite. And even then, 2 bites aren't enough to euthanize. On our block, the rottweiller bit at joggers, who never filed a claim. It ran after a 2 year old. Finally, I called animal control. The owner was made to erect a concrete fence in the backyard. Pathetic! It only took one time for the backdoor to be left ajar when the owner had that rottie in the house. I used to hold my breath and carry pepper spray when I walked my dog past that house. If I could have carried a gun, I would have.

We thought ours was incorrigible up until about age 3. She was stubborn as a rock and if you didn't keep establishing the pack order (with her NOT on top) she'd push it and try to take over.

A couple of times we had to roll her on her back, lean over her, and growl into her face to get her to cave in. Never hit her, just did the dominant dog thing on her until she got the point. She's been a joy since she finally got the message...

Some of them are just real pigheaded. I've only personally met one Lab that was beyond hope - she was a wild thing, bit kids, knocked holes in walls at age 6, and once ate a full bottle of Prozac and nearly died.

After the 1st time my brother came to spend time with us at my house with his grown male and female lab, I told him he was required to leave a $200.00 deposit in advance.

"The real 'tragedy' here is that had professional attention (rather than Liberal stupidity) been rendered after maybe even the 'tenth' report of fear and concern by neighbors; this would not have happened."

If your next door neighbor keeps calling the cops because she is afraid because she knows you have guns in your house and they come and take them away, then she can stop being afraid of being hurt because of your guns. The point is, you can't prosecute someone or confiscate their property BEFORE an attack takes place just because a neighbor is afraid something might happen.

I live across the street from one now. It is regularly off leash and comes bounding across the street to say hello. I have made a great display of unaggressive affection toward it, for it has that sharp/shy quality that some dogs get when they've been yelled at too much. She won't let me touch her half the time, and feels guilty for asking me for a pet. Very troubling, but as long as she remains happy to see me, it'll be ok, I guess.

Labs can be hard. They ARE boisterous, large, and need discipline from the start.

I am glad that the friend's grandson is looking for a place!

Good luck!

Thanks! This creature has me very unhappy. I don't like being made to "not like" a dog, but she sure does it. Plus she barks constantly.

"The gun is very unlikely to jump a fence and attack someone without it's owner's knowledge/command etc without provocation"

True. Ususally they're in kahootz with a renegade SUV.

Sounds like she wasn't raised properly.
But you are good to try and give her a home till the grandson can get her out!

"Yeah, well you gotta watch those SUVs"

No doubt about it. Why, Rush was saying just yesterday that there is one out there on the loose right now that is wanted for kidnapping and rape! Imagine that.

Sorry folks, it's the same argument and the same logic. Pitbulls (guns) are just too dangerous and should be banned. You two just happen to have a thing about pit bulls while gun banners have a thing about guns. It's the same philosophy too. Somethings are just too dangerous for some people therefore they should be done away with.

BTW, I don't own a pitbull and I find the breed unattractive. I much prefer Danes and Mastiffs. Of course, there are some who think those breeds are too large and should also be done away with.

Eggs, if we weren't so far from you I'd ask to meet her and maybe adopt her. Hubby has a weakness for the naughty blockheaded ones, and we've been thinking of getting our 11 year old a companion (and also so we don't end up dogless when she passes on).

LQ, I don't know if even your husband could break through the stubborness of THIS one. I'm in Calif, so probably out of your neighborhood.

But it's a sweet thought. Thanks.
