I'm a Israel supporter but this attack stinks and from what I've read about it, it was deliberate.

Roger that! But why? Has anyone ever offered an MO on what could be gained? Was Israel a pawn to CIA NSA rivalry?

Don't mean to pin these questions on you but usually there's a motive. Am I wrong?

The "motive" I've heard the most was that it was done to prevent us from finding out about a mass execution of Arab POWs.

Don't know if that makes enough sense to attack a US ship but if the USS LIBERTY could have been sunk it might have been easier to "Explain" the terrible accident away.

Another piece of history that I had never heard before. Why would Johnson cover it up? Oh wait, he was an idiot. Silly me, never mind.

I remember this, I was in high school and following the progress of the Six Day War in the news. At the time the "accident" story was pretty much accepted.

Part II tomorrow will explain a little more about the Johnson Administrations reaction and the "investigation", it really doesn't answer the "whys" though, that's what everyone is still trying to find discover.

This incident reinforces my opinion of Johnson, which we discussed on an earlier thread.

I don't expect the truth will become known, at least in my lifetime, beyond the story as you have told it.

This thread puts me a little in your debt. If you run into trouble I'll be back, though I have to leave for work soon.

Part II goes more into the reaction and investigation, if some of the quotes attributed to Johnson are true, he was dispicable than I thought.

Johnson . . . despicable

Yep. I'm trying to remember the decoration Johnson was awarded for taking a joy ride in the Pacific theater. Silver Star, I think.

I don't know what to think about the Liberty attack. By 1967 the U.S. had become Israel's biggest arms supplier. It just doesn't make sense to me for them to attack one of our ships.

I'm a supporter of Israel, but I have an open mind on this. I just don't get the motive.

I just don't get the motive.

That's the $64,000 question.

SAM, I don't think either side wants the truth to get out, therefore, we'll never know it. What we do know is something went terribly wrong and American lives were lost. Sad.

Thank you for this thread today. I'm looking forward to part two tomorrow.
