My uncle was a pastor on Wake for seven years in the sixties, has since been in Honolulu. As I recall during his time there two japaniese soldiers were found in a cave some 20-30 years after the war. I also remember a story of my cousins finding a live bomb on the beach in front of there house one morning. I was a seven year old boy living on Wake Island in 1971. As you can possibly tell by the photographs in the post of the tiny island, there are no caves, or anywhere else to go unnoticed for any time at all.
The live bomb story, however, is completely believable. The woman living in the other side of our duplex was angry when the bomb squad came over and took away the live hand grenade that she found while beach combing. Live ammunition was found regularly and disposed of. Playing war with my frients in Japanese bunkers, that really did have blood stains on the floors and walls, was a real thrill for a young kid.
It was a very brief period in my life over thirty years ago, butI still long to go back someday.

There is a story behind this picture. It's a painting commissioned for propaganda purposes by the Japanese military. It shows American prisoners cheering their loss to their Japanese "liberators" on Wake Island. No one was cheering that day.
We've seen a lot of anti-American propaganda lately. It sounds all too familiar.
