F/A-18 Hornets of Strike Fighter Squadron 81 approach Virginia Beach upon their return to Naval Air Station Oceana and to NAS Norfolk following a six-month deployment aboard the USS George Washington. The squadron was part of the carrier air wing embarked on the Norfolk-based carrier. While deployed, the air wing flew approximnately 10,000 sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Family members and friends brave a chilly rain to cheer the arrival of the USS George Washington at Naval Station Norfolk. The carrier and her battle group returned home after a six-month deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The battle group also participated in numerous exercises with allies in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean and visited a number of countries. Those things your mom is giving you are so special..but I know you know that! I have to tell you that I was very upset with a family I know of who threw all their dad's military stuff away without even knowing what it was. My husband was horrified to find the man's infantry medal (the one with the rifle) in the yard being trampled on. No one cared. Ugh! We took it home for safe keeping. :)
