Good morning ladies and gents. Flag-o-Gram.

"Out of the Army? I'd never consider that," says Sgt. Gene Braxton, who re-enlisted and will begin parachute jump training before a possible third tour in Iraq. (Post / Craig F. Walker)

Yes, we're fine.

Some of my coworkers were freaked out when I mentioned the only reason I wasn't out chasing the storm was the fact I didn't get home until 9pm. Otherwise, I'd likely have been in the middle of the action.

Blown Primaries bump for the Freeper Foxhole.

We had our maintanence shutdown last weekend at work. Basically we have the power down and clean the substations and do major repair work that needs to be done when the plant is down. Power to the plant went down early SAT morning and was back up SAT evening to most of the plant.

Monfay morning one of our substatiions decided to ZOT itself with the result that it took out the service entrance to our half of the plant as well. Nothing like the sound of 13,800 volts blowning out the primaries :-( Fortunately the service entrance reset.

Back to work to see if the temp fix worked out last night

Your Biography

READ: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. —2 Timothy 4:7

When D. L. Moody was moving into old age, he was asked to grant permission for his biography. Moody refused, saying, “A man’s life should never be written while he is living. What is important is how a man ends, not how he begins.”

For better or worse, I have failed to follow that dictum. My biography has been published. Yet I agree with Moody that the way our lives end is the crucial test of authentic discipleship. Only if we remain in a steadfast relationship with the Savior can we be confident not merely of entering heaven, but of obtaining the victor’s crown (1 Corinthians 9:25).

Paul was concerned about the possibility of being disapproved by his Lord (v.27). He was a redeemed believer who was serving the Lord, yet he feared that his service might prove to be wood, hay, and straw rather than gold, silver, and precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:12-13).

What will be the Lord’s appraisal of our lives? Will someone evaluating us be able to say honestly that we continued to bear fruit in old age? (Psalm 92:14). Whatever vocation we pursue, with the help of the Holy Spirit we may be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Vernon C Grounds

Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful,
May the fire of our devotion light their way;
May the footprints that we leave lead them to believe,
And the lives we live inspire them to obey.  —Mohr

For the ignorant, old age is as winter; for the learned, it is a harvest.  —Jewish proverb

Interesting tidbit for today. Just in case you did't know...

Happy Birthday to You, the four-line ditty was written as a classroom greeting in 1893 by two Louisville teachers, Mildred J. Hill, an authority on Negro spirituals, and Dr. Patty Smith Hill, professor emeritus of education at Columbia University.

The melody of the song Happy Birthday to You was composed by Mildred J. Hill, a schoolteacher born in Louisville, KY, on June 27, 1859. The song was first published in 1893, with the lyrics written by her sister, Patty Smith Hill, as "Good Morning To All."

Happy Birthday to You was copyrighted in 1935 and renewed in 1963. The song was apparently written in 1893, but first copyrighted in 1935 after a lawsuit (reported in the New York Times of August 15, 1934, p.19 col. 6)

In 1988, Birch Tree Group, Ltd. sold the rights of the song to Warner Communications (along with all other assets) for an estimated $25 million (considerably more than a song). (reported in Time, Jan 2, 1989 v133 n1 p88(1)

In the 80s, the song Happy Birthday to You was believed to generate about $1 million in royalties annually. With Auld Lang Syne and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, it is among the three most popular songs in the English language. (reported in Time, Jan 2, 1989 v133 n1 p88(1)

Happy Birthday to You continues to bring in approximately 2 million dollars in licensing revenue each year, at least as of 1996 accounting, according to Warner Chappell and a Forbes magazine article.

Here is what Snopes says about it...

The Legacy

READ: Psalm 34:11-22

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. —3 John 1:4

Her writing career spanned three decades, from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s. She wrote 12 books and received 16 honorary doctorate degrees. But 3 years before she died of cancer in 1996, popular humorist Erma Bombeck told an ABC TV interviewer that no matter how many columns she had written, her legacy would be her three children. “If I did a bad job with them,” she said, “then everything else [I] do isn’t very important.”

Bombeck had riches and fame and the goodwill of millions of readers, but she realized that her top priority was taking care of her children.

Although no parent can be guaranteed that his or her child will turn out to be a godly model citizen, those of us who are parents must start with Erma’s attitude. Our motivation is to provide spiritually, physically, and emotionally for our children. They will be our legacy.

That means introducing them to the Savior, providing spiritual guidance (Psalm 34:11-14), praying for them, and encouraging them to find mentors who can guide them in godly living.

Sometimes it’s a battle. Often it’s expensive in time and toil. But the value of a child overshadows it all. Dave Branon

Our children are a gift from God
To nurture and to love;
They need our help in guiding them
To turn their thoughts above.  —Sper

Little children are of great value to God.
