...the use of chain shot was pretty much a French idea. The concept was dead on arrival.

LOL. That must be it.

Agree on the canister or grapeshot. I don't think mass production of Maxim guns would have been possible in the South, although the North could have done it (just barely). Anachronistic as all heck, of course, Maxim developed his weapon during 1881-85.

As far as barbed wire goes, the first mass production started in 1868 (google) just late for the war. Modern barbed wire went into production in 1874. Smooth wire was used successfully in the 1861-65 affair, though, as I recollect.

also, reference the cannon that SOMETIMES could ====> it was like TOPSY, when it was good it was VERY good & when it was BAD it was just AWFUL! (if nothing else, it scared a BUNCH of yankee boys into "departing swiftly to the rear"!)

Can you imagine our War between the States being fought with WWI weapons? Frightening.

actually, it WAS in many ways.

the repeating rifles of 1862 were just as murderous at their desired range as the rifles of WW1 were & the FEW gatling & volley guns were just as brutally effective to 400 yards as the rather primitive MGs of the Great War.

furthermore, the Whitworth scoped sniper rifles of the CSA were MORE deadly than the 1903 sniper rifles of WW1, in that they were accurate at a MUCH greater range. in one recorded/documented case, a yankee LT was killed by a black CSA sniper from a distance of 1600+ YARDS! (that's more than one mile!). too bad our "lads in gray" didn't have MORE of those!

also, in BOTH the WBTS & WW1, the tactics were FAR BEHIND the level of effectiveness of the weapons!
