Turtledove wrote a three volume alternate history with a 1914 WBTS. The usual Turtledove PC and weak military sections, but moderately fun.

A real WWI weapons WBTS would have been interesting. Sadly bloody, for sure. The Confederate - Union border would have been so long for the available manpower that I suspect the war would have gone something like the WWI Russian - Carpathian front rather than like the Western Front. Probably have Douhet style attacks on populations, where one half of the bomb tonnage was mustard gas.

I read the whole Turtledove series, including "How Few Remain" the Second WBTS. (Based on the premise that the SOuth won the firsat one). Not a bad series overall.
