If instead of Sterling Price the Confederates had had Bedford Forrest. Shoot, if instead of Jeff Davis they had had Bedford Forrest.
To say that Mine Creek was not a serious Union victory (as the first writer does) is foolish. Benteen did exactly the right thing. He had surprise and a divided enemy.
Price was foolish to have his forces split on two sides of the river. His troopers needed to be between the pursuit and his train. Price apparently had no recon out. Price was taken by surprise. He is responsible.

Strange twist of fate that years later Benteen would be involved with a force that was split by Custer at the Little Big Horn.

Made me think. The mind skitters down my poor memories of the events at the Little Big Horn. Think what a difference a few radios to coordinate the separated commands would have made. Or a recon aircraft. How about twenty or thirty Maxims with 20,000 rounds apiece, hey. Or the British regulars at Waterloo. Or the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Arthur MacArthur's command, who assaulted Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga.
Missionary Ridge, 24th Wisconsin
Strange twist of fate that years later Benteen would be involved with a force that was split by Custer at the Little Big Horn. Strange twist of fate. Indeed.
