Agree on Afganistan. The Red Army was not eager to see Stingers again, this time in Poland, much less the new stuff.
When the Stingers got to Afganistan the Soviet aircraft stayed above 10,000 feet, as I recollect. A Hind was meat on the table.
The GRU espionage network was being fed first class disinformatsia by Casey (brilliant man, and Woodward is a damned liar). The material was believable because it fit in so perfectly with what the GRU was getting through clandestine sources.
The Soviets were looking at a future where Timberwind nuclear rockets put free electron lasers into orbit. These lasers were intended to shoot down two hundred aircraft per SECOND. Don't know how that machine might have worked against a T72, probably no more than two hundred in one minute. Anyway, the Red Army was not keen on the whole deal, and told the Politburo to go fight their own wars.
Anyhow, this is part of the reason the Soviets lost their nerve. I personally think that the Soviets came very, very close to invading Poland and killing those millions I mentioned earlier.

Well told. It seems that the Warsaw Pact estimates of Polish dead agree with mine. Dang, I'm good! Good and lucky!
Reagan promised first class weapons for the Poles, and SDI with the big stuff, and not only the little bitty ICBM intercepters. The Strategic Defense Initiative was a major factor in the offer the Soviets could not refuse. Look up "Timberwind". We were deadly serious. Way beyond nuclear war serious. The Democrats were apoplectic.

Our Jays are marked with black on the wings and are crested. Very pretty but noisy and hogs at a feeder. Drive all the other feeders away.

It's called a scrub jay. Looks like a small one, we have some as big as 'regular' blue jays. Sam puts out peanuts in the shell for them, they love it and they are fun to watch when they try to decide which one they want and then try to fit two in their beak to fly away with.
