Get in shape. Make what you eat work for you. An old person has to be lean and mean to go to war. Your mind is your most important weapon, the tool of our trade.

Remember MacArthur was seventy-one at Inchon. And he was a heavy smoker. If he could do the job at 71 I SHALL be able to do it at 80. Cultivate your Warrior within. In my minds eye I can see what you can become. (Warriors know that intuition is at least as much use as numerical analysis.)

What I have said is true. I am too much of a "Do what I say, not what I do" sort of guy, but I am working on getting ready. Improvement is usually very slow. That is the way things are. So, let us begin.

You know, Snip, for years I figured those people (Robert Edward Lee called the invaders "those people") were going to win. Couldn't figure what to do.

Even studied Marxism-Leninism for a while, the real stuff, to see if I could stomach joining the winning side. Just could not.

Then I figured to keep my mouth shut. Stay out of their gun sights.

Finally, I figured that if Gulag was where I would die, at least in Gulag I would die in the company of men and women I could respect.

Now I am optimistic about how things are working out. A fighting chance is forming, a way, or more, a smell coming out of the darkness. Yes, that is the right metaphor, a smell. I can smell it.
