I remember reading that before the war when the Germans and Soviets were cooperating, when the Germans showed the Soviets their PzIII and PZIV tanks that the Soviets complained that they weren't being shown the "top of the line" equipment. Since they were working n the T-34 and KV-I they couldn't believe the Germans didin't have better tanks in the works.
I guess the Germans didn't have the best technology in every area. The T-34 really caught the Germans with their grill doors open.
Spanish is my second language and I found it much more regular and sensible than English. English was cobbled together haphazardly out of old German, Danish and French. It's strength is the resulting richness of the vocabulary; there are usually several ways of saying the same thing, with varying nuances.

Yeah they sure did. If the Russians hadn't been so inept in their use of the T-34 and KV-1 they had a good chance of stalling Barbarossa earlier than the winter of 1941.

I've read quite a few Clancy's and seen him interviewed over the years. I've always had a feeling that he was not the Reaganite people think, that he's a bit squishy. I think he has a genuine affection for the folks in uniform, though.
There are a lot of people who don't get that the origins of modern terrorism is the Islamic fascism that began rising as far back as the 20's and 30's. Iraq, Iran and Syria as islamo-fascist states nurture and support terrorists. What Bush is doing directly threatens terrorism, but I don't think Clancy can see it.
I don't know what Zinni's game is. He is very invested in the Middle East status quo and could have made a good living in retirement as another Middle East diplomat/expert. The job tenure is good since the status quo didn't solve any problems. Zinni also was very prominent in the school that said there would be no more symmetrical armor wars and that we should restructure the military to take on small asymmetrical wars. Iraq put the lie to that theory, so Zinni's criticism of Iraq gets back some of his reputation.
I do wish they'd just shut up if they don't have anything nice to say. The bad guys are getting the message loud and clear that if they just keep up attacking our troops eventually the naysayers in the US will force us to withdraw, like in Vietnam. These idiots are getting our guys killed.
