Yeah, the Germans now like to point out that Hitler was an Austrian. :-)

They like talking about Goethe, Schiller etc., to teach us "real culture", to teach us to be "good Europeans", to teach us this or that, to tell us how bad we are, what we should change - walking encyclopedias!

Some things never change.

"Normal" airplanes have a great deal of "flight stability" built into them. The distance between the wing and the rear airfoils makes a strong "couple" force to straighten out the aircraft so that aerodynamic forces control "yaw" (swing sideways to the line of flight) and "pitch", (change wing angle of attack, and therefore center of lift, lift amount, and drag). There is "dihedral", a vee shaped wing mounting, where the outboard ends of the wing are higher than the inboard, so that when the aircraft rolls to the side the lower wing's lift becomes greater than the upper wings lift, leveling the aircraft. There is a bunch more of this kind of stuff, you need someone with more expertise than I.

My point is that Northrop's flying wing was unstable, especially in the jet version, and unstable because of inherent design. There was no military reason to produce it over the B-36, in fact the reverse, since it was dangerous to fly. Landing in a crosswind must have been about impossible. Anything but very gentle turns would be flirting with death. I do not understand how it could have made a spin recovery.

Anyway, maybe someone with special knowledge can say something about this attractive but alarming design? Engineer pilots, maybe?

Morning Iris7. As much as I read about the dynamics of flight, when I see a plane fly over I still just have to shake my head in wonder. It just seems impossible, especially the large planes.

"...tend to be very bossy, conceited and cheeky. Especially Germans."

And always amazed that other people cannot see their obvious superiority. Buy something from a German and be forever grateful that the ubermensch, out of the noble kindness of his heart, has been willing to help such a slob as yourself.

Probably the product of some sort of deep seated anxiety, probably caused the beatings administered as part of potty training. Love that psychobabble!

Anyone offended, please recalibrate your humor sensors, you are close to embarrassing yourself!

The jet version was probably more uncontrollable than the propeller driven design because the piston engine, when the throttle was decreased, would slow the propellers instantly, creating drag, and turning the machine right or left. The jet engine when spooled down decayed thrust slowly and did not increase drag, reducing yaw control, as earlier.

WHO THREW THE OVERALLS IN MRS. MURPHY'S CHOWDER ?

Mrs. Murphy gave a party just about a week ago.
Everything was plentiful, The Murphys, they're not slow.
They treated us like gentlemen, we tried to act the same,
If it weren't for what happened...Well, it was a doggone shame.

When Mrs. Murphy dished the chowder out, she fainted on the spot.
She found a pair of overalls at the bottom of the pot.
McGinty, he got roaring mad, his eyes were bulging out,
He jumped onto the piano and loudly he did shout......

"Who threw the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke, so he shouted all the louder,
"It's a rotten trick that's true, I can lick the drip that threw
The overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder."

They dragged the pants from out the soup and laid them on the floor.
Each man swore upon his life, he'd ne'er seen them before.
They were plastered up with mortar and had patches on the knee,
They'd had their many ups and downs as we could plainly see.

And when Mrs. Murphy, she came to, she b'gan to cry and pout,
She'd put them in the wash that day and forgot to pull them out.
McGinty, he excused himself for what he said that night,
So we put music to the words and sang with all our might....

"Who threw the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke, so we shouted all the louder,
"It's a rotten trick that's true, and we'll lick the drip that threw
The overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder."

It was once said that the P61 was as big as a B25 and could maneuver with a P38. P61 was my favorite WWII fighter.
