ROFL. I didn't finish that thought well. I think many Americans have some Polish ancestry, known, admitted, or not. It's good to see this stuff brought forward. The story of Col Urban was great as well.

Cannon Fodder

Good choice but no, I'm looking for a word Hurtgen kept using in his book, not replenish but something like that. It was the term used by the Army for resupplying fighting men for all the casualties. Arrggh, I can't think of it!

I see JFE, Lieutenant Clostermann's Tempest "Le Grande Charles". Anyone who thinks Frenchmen cannot fight has no knowledge of what has gone before.

Such a high price paid for a useless piece of real estate.

Yep, Born overseas and joined the Free French.

Pierre Clostermann

Pierre Clostermann was born on February 28 1921 at Curitiba, Brazil, where his father worked as a French diplomat. At an age of only sixteen he aquired his pilot's licence in November 1937. He was educated in Paris and studied engineering in USA when France fell.

Career Details

In 1941 he joined the Free French Forces (341 "Alsace" Squadron). The following year he was transferred to RAF and 602 Squadron, where he served in Spitfire. During this time he destroyed at least 11 enemy aircraft, 2 probable and seven damage.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Hurtgen's book "Hell in the Hurtgen".

The losses in officers and NCO's in is mind boggling. (136 Officers and 2,667 EM). The 22nd Infantry lost 86% of it's normal strength in 18 days.

"Replacements"? A WW2 term. The 1st Division guys I hear said that the US Army was the 1st Division and endless replacements.

Howdy, Snippy, nice to hear from you.

Yeah, ammunition, just stuff to be ordered from supply when needed. Like ammunition, only useful to be expended.

"Cannon fodder" is an anti-war term from the post 1914-18 war era. Ran across a stash of old books including "Merchants of Death" once, from the '30s. A very anti-war era amongst the "intelligentsia".
