YEP!

i hope, one of these days, to get him to talk to my tape machine about his expieriences W/ lancers & partisans!

like most WW2 vets, he doesn't say much. (fyi, my dad never told me that he spent more than a month behind German lines during 1943! i found it out after he died.)

SAM, just want to say this is an excellent post.

Still working on the Polish cracking of Enigma story, just can't boil it down enough and make it accessible enough for the non-crypto type person. The fellow who made the intellectual breakthrough, Marian Rejewski, and his two co-workers, Jerzy Rozycki and Henryk Zygalski, did the most amazing thing I have ever heard about.

There is a piece by Rejewski at the "INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS of the Polish Academy of Sciences" website. Extraordinarily clear, personally humble. Awesome.

A little technical, but a gem. http://www.impan.gov.pl/Great/Rejewski/article.html

That's a tough job to try and explain that to someone like me who has a real hard time with math. I remember reading a little about it and 90% just goes over my head.

I personally have a very hard time with code breaking, the whole thing just drives me nuts. Math only drives me about 10% nuts, most of the time, sometimes hitting 110% nuts, though! So what Rejewski did just floors me. What an insight.

I can make sure I get correct change from my dollar and that's about all the math I can handle. :-)

Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino

Czy widzisz te gruzy na szczycie?
Tam wróg twój sie kryje jak szczur!
Musicie, musicie, musicie
Za kark wzi¹æ i str¹ciæ go z chmur!
I poszli szaleni, za¿arci,
I poszli zabijaæ i mœciæ,
I poszli jak zawsze uparci,
Jak zawsze za honor sie biæ.

Refren:

Czerwone maki na Monte Cassino
Zamiast rosy pi³y polsk¹ krew.
Po tych makach szed³ ¿o³nierz i gin¹³,
Lecz od œmierci silniejszy by³ gniew!
Przejd¹ lata i wieki przemin¹,
Pozostan¹ œlady dawnych dni
I tylko maki na Monte Cassino
Czerwieñsze bêd¹, bo z polskiej wzrosn¹ krwi.

Runêli przez ogieñ, straceñcy,
Niejeden z nich dosta³ i pad³.
Jak ci z Samosierry szaleñcy,
Jak ci spod Rokitny, sprzed lat.
Runêli impetem szalonym
I doszli. I uda³ siê szturm.
I sztandar swój bia³o-czerwony
Zatknêli na gruzach wœród chmur.

Refren:
Czerwone maki...

Czy widzisz ten rz¹d bia³ych krzy¿y?
To Polak z honorem bra³ œlub.
IdŸ naprzód - im dalej, im wy¿ej,
Tym wiêcej ich znajdziesz u stóp.
Ta ziemia do Polski nale¿y,
Choæ Polska daleko jest st¹d,
Bo wolnoæ krzy¿ami sie mierzy -
Historia ten jeden ma b³¹d.

Refren:
Czerwone maki..

"Red Poppies On Monte Cassino"

Since the mountain was full of beautiful red poppies when the battle took place, in May 1944, a song entitled - Red Poppies on Monte Cassino was written almost immediately afterwards. It was finished in a couple of hours after a victory and performed the next day after the battle to the Polish troops - and became known almost immediately! Music was written by Alfred Schutz (1910-1999) and words by Feliks Konarski (1907-1991). The song commemorates the heroism of Polish soldiers and links them to poppies – which, according to the song, were nourished by Polish blood thus they are so red.
