I didn't know much about the actual battle. Did I get this right, that Santa Anna did not occupy the high ground, but had a reverse slope defense? And he and his senior officers were literally napping when the attack came? Some "Napoleon of the West"!

Not sure about the defense he had set up but they were caught napping.

Caught napping. Amazing!

It appears from the diagram that there was a rise between the Texans and Mexicans, that the Mexicans were camped beneath the rise, next to the river. If so, the Texas army would have been bearing down on the Mexicans before they even saw them. I guess they valued a short walk to get a drink of water more than the high ground.

Not being a TX native, my knowledge is pretty limited. Today's thread went a long way toward fixing that.

I know we touched on it, breifly, in TX history in college. I probably didn't pay as much attention as I should have, thinking I would be moving back to CA after the service.

I also notice they have a lake and swamp area behind them, no where to go.

Thanks for sharing the story of your Great Great Great Uncle Elisha with us.

You are welcome!
He was on my mothers side, there are others on my fathers side but not as well documented,
those guys tended to be a bit shady and less subject to scrutiny.

Elisha is on the big plaque at San Jacinto which you can no longer see without paying $6.00 or so. :-(

Every family seems to have some of those.

Don't you hate when they do that?
