P-38M Nightfighter

P-38M with AN/APS-4 Radar

P-38Ms Night Lightnings were converted P-38L-5-LO Lightnings designed to meet the need for a speedy night fighter. All normal P-38 armament was retained but an AN/APS-4 radar set was added, an extra seat for the radar operator was installed, and it was painted gloss black.

WORLD WAR II B-24 "SNOOPERS" By Stephen M. Perrone

The Snoopers came into being because on May 30, 1942, Commanding General Army Air Forces, Hap Arnold, ordered the Director of Technical Services to establish the Sea Search Attack Development Unit, with headquarters at Langley Field, Virginia. This group was originally formed to develop tactics and techniques of anti-submarine warfare, but the development of the SCR-717B Long Range Radar Search Radar and the super-secret SCR-729 Low Altitude (LAB) Radar Bombsight mounted in the ASV Radar-Equipped B-24 airplane gave birth to the Snoopers.

The planes flown by the 868th were often called SB-24s and sometimes LABs (Low Altitude Bomber). They were equipped with SRC-717-B search and navigation radar, AN/APQ-5 LABS bombing radar, SCR-729 IFF (Identification, Friend or Foe) and an AN/ARN-1 radio altimeter. The ball turret contained the antenna for the SC-717-B radar.

Consolidated B-24 "Liberator" from the 465th Bomb Group en route to target. BTO radar can be seen in place of the ball turret.

Evening Phil Dragoo

Thanks for the info on the Snoopers.

"War of the Worlds" is getting real dated but it's still one of the flicks I'll watch everytime it's on. Loved the flying machines.
