I prefer to think of it as Neil Armstrong. :)

****

The Ohio quarter, the second quarter of 2002 and seventeenth in the series, honors the state's contribution to the history of aviation, depicting an early aircraft and an astronaut, superimposed as a group on the outline of the state. The design also includes the inscription "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers."

The claim to this inscription is well justified -- the history making astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn were both born in Ohio, as was Orville Wright, co-inventor of the airplane. Orville and his brother, Wilbur Wright, also built and tested one of their early aircraft, the 1905 Flyer III, in Ohio.

Wow, Sam, you shouldn't have had any doubts about this thread. Really a gripping read. We are so fortunate not to have had a war on our land since the Civil War.

It's also interesting to have accounts of the Eastern Front, which we don't hear so much about in America. Seems there was an even higher level of brutality there.

The last time I was in London I went to the Imperial War Museum (highly recommended) which had photos of people bedding down in the tube stations during the Blitz. People were also bedding down next to the tracks - not for the faint hearted.

We've caught the fire bug in Colorado, with a fire blowing up in the mountains above Boulder. We're hoping for snow or cold rain tonight - could you send some our way? :)

Hi tanker,

It is a wonderful thread isn't it!

I heard about your fires (from FR of course). Are you in any danger? The thread had said it was out of control and many of your firefighters were in California helping them.

Keep us informed.

Thanks for the concern, Snippy. No, Denver and Boulder are in no danger (at least not for now!). The fire is above Boulder near a little town called Jamestown, which has been evacuated. The good news is that a cold front is approaching. The bad news is that as is typical this time of year we're getting 50 mph wind gusts ahead of the front, which have fanned the fire from 50 to 500 acres in just a few hours. And a grass fire flared up just south of the southern suburbs of Denver.

The last six weeks have been a spectacular Indian Summer, but we've gotten no moisture at all.

Thanks CT.

Is there any interest out there for an "Eastern Front" thread? Kursk, Stalingrad, Barbarossa, etc.

I'll see what I can do about sending some rain your way.

There certainly is interest on my part. I don't mean in any way to discount the heroics of our soldiers in the ETO, but in my opinion Stalingrad and Kursk were the decisive battles of the European war.
