I think for the most part this is being driven by AIDS, and the desire to be able to obtain low cost health insurance as a "spouse."
This is where it gets ugly folks, I personally don't give a rip what consenting adults do in thier own bedroom...until it costs me money. And when gay "spouses" or partners or whatever they choose to call themselfs get the same rights as hetro couples without paying the same dues it's going to put a hurt on the economy.

I like to examine similar topics amd social anthropology and the the very ancient histories and migration of early modern man.
It's a lot of speculation and observance and can quickly become a rather emotive topic from about every imaginable angle around here.
Some posters say (and I agree largely), "people make culture, not vice versa".
Others say, culture and peoples are like the chicken and the egg...which came first?
I have no answers.
I like your comprehensiveness and will keep and eye out.
Regards!

"BTW, I disagree 100% that the US will "go bankrupt" in 2016."
Feel free to disagree. SS is only 20% of the problem of insolvency; Medicare is the other 80%. The Cato plan for the voluntary privatization of SS is viable, but Medicare cannot be fixed. Socialism doesn't work. When somebody who considers themselves a conservative such as yourself does not recognize the problem, let alone not recognize the severity of the problem, then you begin to get a feel for just how bad things really are.
CobaltBlue is a beautiful color, but the ink the country is drowning is red, and wishful thinking is not going to put things back into the black.

Economic projections are based on assumptions. I never trust economic projections that are as far out as 2016. I am only 51 but have already seen many, many economic projections bite the dust, not to mention global cooling.
I think it's fair to say that there are problems which need to be solved.

"When all is lost, why do so many people, like Antony and Cleopatra, commit suicide? Would it not be more courageous to live and fight on?" -- Shakespeare Your Shakespeare quotation is bogus, I suspect. I did a google search and discovered it was only an essay question on a Shakespeare class assignment web page. It certainly does not appear in the language of Shakespeare. If Shakespeare had said it, I would think it would pop up with a thousand selections on google, instead of just two.

... that all drugs, even cyanide, should be legalized; ...
Wasn't aware that cyanide had been made illegal - but it shouldn't surprise me. Potassium cyanide used to be a staple in an analytic chemistry lab, and was available to the general public as well by mail order. While mystery writers were fond of it, I don't recall any particular problems caused by cyanide.

The last time I remember reading about cyanide in the news was the Tylenol murders.
