McClintock concedes defeat in recall race

SACRAMENTO (AP) — State Sen. Tom McClintock, who refused to drop out of the recall election despite figures showing that he lagged behind two other replacement candidates, conceded defeat Tuesday.
But the conservative Republican lawmaker claimed a moral victory, saying that his ideas of slashing taxes and government programs had caught on with voters and other candidates.

"The vision that we offered of rolling back the taxes and regulations that have choked our economy, of reining in our out-of-control bureaucracy, and of restoring our public works has clearly resonated across the electorate and has clearly become a solid mandate for this new administration," he told about 50 cheering supporters at a Sacramento hotel.

"I believe our campaign acted as the conscience of this election," he added. "We framed the issues on which this contest was ultimately decided."

McClintock said he had congratulated Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger and promised to support him in "challenging and confronting and defeating the spending lobby that's entrenched in the halls of this state Capitol." ....

Davis says he accepts voters' judgment

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In the same hotel where he celebrated his first election five years earlier, Gov. Gray Davis stood before a crowd of supporters late Tuesday and admitted defeat in only the second successful recall of a sitting governor.
"Tonight, the voters decided it's time for someone else to serve," Davis said, his words interrupted by supporters booing at his concession and chanting "We want Gray" in support.

Davis smiled and waved them off. As the chanting subsided, he said of the state's voters, "I accept their judgment."

"I have placed a call to Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger just a few minutes ago to congratulate him on being elected governor," he said.

Davis returned to the Biltmore Hotel on Tuesday as the least popular figure in modern California political history, targeted in a recall just a year into his second term.

"I've been at a lot of functions at the Biltmore where everybody is upbeat but not tonight," said Paul Bechley of the Laborers' Union.

In earlier years, crowds had swarmed the Biltmore's Crystal Room on Election Night, but on Tuesday, there was mostly silence. Reporters outnumbered Davis supporters.

"Being a Democrat, we've had a lot of successful nights here," said Bob Mulholland, state Democratic party spokesman. "This is not one of those nights.

"As the governor said, `We've had worse days in Vietnam.'" ....

Davis ousted; Arnold wins

LOS ANGELES - California voters recalled Gov. Gray Davis yesterday and replaced him with Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, ending one of the most bizarre elections in American history.

The Austrian-born actor thanked California´s voters early this morning, describing the vote as the latest chapter in his journey from champion bodybuilder to action film star and now governor of the nation´s most populous state.

"From the time I got here, you embraced me. Everything I have is because of the state of California," he said after being introduced by Jay Leno -- the man who gave Mr. Schwarzenegger the "Tonight Show" platform on which he announced his candidacy.

"I came here with absolutely nothing and now I have absolutely everything. You have given me the greatest gift of all -- your trust. I will do everything I can to live up to that trust. I will not disappoint you. I will not let you down," he told the cheering crowd of supporters in Los Angeles.

With 16 percent of precincts reporting last night, the vote to recall Mr. Davis was ahead by 57 percent to 43 percent. Among the replacement candidates, Mr. Schwarzenegger was the choice of 52 percent, compared with 29 percent for Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and 12 percent for state Sen. Tom McClintock, and 2 percent for Green Party candidate Peter Camejo.

Mr. Davis conceded defeat in a Los Angeles hotel shortly after calling Mr. Schwarzenegger to offer congratulations.

The California Recall: Media Resume Use of Exit Polls to Project Winners

[The Wall Street Journal] | 10/08/2003, 06:04 | Dow Jones
Posted on 10/07/2003 11:58 PM PDT by AgThorn

They're baa-a-a-c-k. The exit polls, that is.

After embarrassing misfires in predicting election results in 2000 and 2002, the and five major television networks disbanded the Voter News Service consortium that had administered exit polls in both of those votes.

But they didn't abandon the idea of exit polls themselves, and they returned to the field with a new polling service for yesterday's California gubernatorial recall election.

"There is nothing unreliable about exit polls," says Warren Mitofsky, a consultant who helped usher in surveys of voters leaving polling places more than three decades ago at CBS News. Mr. Mitofsky's firm collaborated with New Jersey-based Edison Media Research on yesterday's California exit poll....

California race too close to call

LOS ANGELES (Reuters)- California's unprecedented recall election has entered its last act as voters jammed polling stations to decide unpopular Gov. Gray Davis's political future and decide whether Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger should begin a political career -- at the top.

Lines in many places began forming at 7 a.m. PDT (3 p.m. British time) when booths opened for Californians to first decide whether to oust Democrat Davis, a charisma-free technocrat under fire for mishandling the state's economy, then pick from an assortment of 135 candidates, including the magnetic bodybuilder turned actor.

Last minute polls showed the race tightening, although Schwarzenegger's camp claimed the actor retained a healthy lead among replacement candidates and that voters appeared ready to boot Davis....

FREEP this poll! Do you think Arnold will be an effective governor?

Time for the terminator to kick ass and take names. Cut, slash, burn...clean house. I think he can do it. It will be tough with an all-democrat legislature but at least he has the VETO power and can stop them from passing any more ridiculous anti-business regulations.

Looks like the rabid lefties have already found this poll...Let's hit it a few times and get it back in Arnold's favor....
