And we have watched a thirty day temper tantrum because the Republican Party wouldn't do as they say... Now, they are going to go pout in a corner and call us names...

Keys has a point. I've never supported this recall; I think it should only be used in cases of gross corruption or incompetence, and California's problems can't all be blamed on Davis. Just because someone has a button on his shirt with an "R" on it doesn't mean that he has anything in common with real conservatives. I suppose in the presidential race it would be a help to have a so-called Republican governor in California, but then you have to ask what it means to be a Republican and whether Arnold Schwartzenegger represents in any way the values of people here in FR.

And being pro-life is not a litmus test for being Republican. Perhaps not, unfortunately. But it damn sure is a litmus test for being a conservative--the most reliable one known to man.
To: Afronaut
But does anyone doubt that the 2004 Republican convention in New York would be dominated by media heavies tripping over themselves to get the governor of the nations most populous state to denounce the GOP platform on social issues (Abortion) as "out of the mainstream"? Not me. This election is very big. And the consequences are going to be very bad, especially for unborn children.

I really don't see ANY Conservative principles being upheld by ANY Republican, including my President! I can think of at least one congressman from your state upholding conservative principles.

I'm not saying that character does not count....but, I am saying that you have to get someone WITH character elected....and sorry, perfection doesn't always get elected....deal with it.

Source please. DFW Hyatt, August 23, 2001, at some Republican function, which was attended by Jim Robinson, Ms. AntiFeminazi, and LurkerNoMore! and several other Freepers.
I'm not going to search for the transcript, but you can e-mail any one of the three above to confirm that Keyes did, indeed, call Bush "evil."

Well, the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition supports Arnold wholeheartedly. The President and chief ghoul of the organization stated on Fox and Friends this weekend that they wouldn't endorse Arnold if he was pro-life. They see the import of this election.

You purposely miss the point.
In a representative republican form of government, the responsibility rests squarely on the sovereign citizen.

Agreed. Except that I don't agree that being a serial groper - if that's true about Arnold - - is a sign of character. Rather, just the opposite.
To: churchillbuff
He called Bush evil. Freepers that were there heard it with their own ears; that's about the time that support for Keyes on FR dropped.

I'm sorry - you are right - many Republicans are pro-choice. And there is a good compromise for the Republican Party if they want to modify the plank. Make it "Informed Choice". Make sure that all clinics have 4-D ultrasounds, same amount of funds to organizations that provide adoption services, federal assistance to women that want to keep their babies - stuff like that.
But it would be nice if this thread focused on the article, not on the integrity of Dr. Keyes. The issue is the corruption of the Republican Party.
To: EternalVigilance
But being a conservative and being a Republican can be two different things. A distinction that you will not make and belittle those who can make it.

It's very simple. When a political party grows, it does so by attracting those who are not as hard-core as the founders. It happened to the Libertarian Party, very quickly in that case since hard-core libertarians are scarce: now the moral libertarians dominate. It is happening to the Republicans. As the party grows, people outside the hard-core conservatism tradition are brought in. The question is whether the party wishes to be minority forever, or add in some mainstream moderates and others so as to actually get things done in the real world.
