During a Steelers-Red$kin$ game a couple of years ago, Myron Cope the Steelers colour commentator referred to them as the Wash Red Faces, until he got a cease and desist order from the Red Faces.

if our biggest problem was how offensive some names where, i think id be coming from where you are. but seeing as we have little things like free speech (and this free speech is not actually harming or detering the freedoms of anyone) i really dont think words in that sense matter to much. words are used to convey a point, message, and emotion. if it took an american indian 30 years to say they were offended, i really doubt they were. they went right through the age of feel good tree hugging without saying a word. it seems the person most offended by it, is the one who only feels that indians SHOULD take offense.
having been called "cheap" and told that i can "hold my liqour" by others hasnt made me feel offended in being scottish, why should a non-specific group of people feel offended by having one of our most succesful (in years gone, but they were) football teams (football being a bigger draw than baseball, showing the popularity of it) named after a "slur" take offence? what about the fighting irish? why arent they included in this?
To: Mr. Mojo
I'd imagine that the court's ruling would've been different if the team in question were named the "Yellowskins" or the "Blackskins."
Yup, likely would be a completely different result. As usual, the American Indian takes it in the kisser for the sake of 'being honored'. But I agree with Chad, it's not something to make a federal case of.

my ancestors also include Cherokee Indians ... and I like the Jeep Cherokee, the Kansas City Chiefs, have no problem with the Redskins ... when we talk, let's have a "pow wow", let's do the "tomahawk chop" and for dinner, let's make "reservations" ...
why? because in no way is it ever, nor has it ever been meant as an INSULT ...
and with the Irish and German in my blood, bring on the Fighting Irish, leprechaun jokes, jokes about St. Patrick's Day, jokes about Germans, whatever ...
buncha crybabies that have nothing better to do complaining in this completely stupid lawsuit ...
To: jgrubbs
no ... it's laughable ... but it's meant to be offensive ... because it's OK to insult whites in the world ... yes, I'm most of European descent (Irish, German, and a bit of Cherokee Indian) ... and the subtle message is that only whites are racist, which is completely ridiculous ...

Seriously? They wear Redskins jackets on the reservation where you work? Interesting! Where is that?
To: Carry_Okie
(Interesting. I still believe it is a disparaging mascot, but the courts have spoken. back to work....)
"What's disparaging about it? Teams don't take names with the intent to disparage but to emulate..."
If you will look at LF's info, I think you will see that it is very likely he has an ulterior motive. That is, I think he is a Cowboy's fan!

Atlanta never had a problem with this one. Did you know that there was also the Atlanta Black Crackers of the Negro Southern League?
