I got into it with some girl trying to sell me the LA Times over the phone. I told her it was a liberal rag, and there was no way I would subscribe.

I said I was smarter than most their writer too. She said there must be some things, like sports, I would read....I said if there was, I would steal that section from Starbucks.

She was giggling at that.

>>I ususally just tell them my bird died.

I tell the paper's telemarketer that the the puppy is trained now, I buy my fish already cleaned, and the bird died.

Reminds me of one of the very earliest Shoe comic strips by Jeff MacNelly. Back before Shoe started his own newspaper, he wrote letters to the editor of the existing paper. One of these read as follows:

"Dear Editor:

In my last letter, I told you to 'stick it in yer kazoo.' I apologize for that remark. It was snide, uncalled for, and totally disrespectful to you and your fine paper. Please allow me to rewrite that ill-conceived letter:

'Dear Editor: while wrapping catfish the other night, I noticed an item on your editorial page...'"

I just saw on KCRA Channel 3 in Sacramento, that the LA Times, Sacramento Bee, and either the San Francisco Chronicle or San Jose Mercury (Man, I should have payed closer attention! Damn!) are all suggesting that US Californians vote NO on the Recall!
See alos, from Dan Weintraub, at www.sacbee.com/insider:

Editorials on the recall

Several of the state’s major papers ring in this morning with editorials on the recall – and almost all of them are negative. The Bee, the LA Times and the San Jose Mercury all recommend a No vote on the recall and pointedly refuse to endorse on the replacement question. The Times and the Bee take time to rip all the major contenders, while the Mercury pretty much ignores them. The San Diego Union-Tribune, meanwhile, endorses the recall after admitting its earlier misgivings, and endorses Arnold in the race to replace.

UPDATE: The Long Beach Press-Telegram endorses Arnold.

Here are the editorials.

The Bee: Vote no on recall

The Bee’s separate editorial on the replacement election, No clear choice

UPDATE: The Bee's editorialists are offering their individual views on the replacement election at the Ed Board's blog, Fly on the Wall.

The LA Times: Why the Recall is Wrong

The Mercury: No…and nobody
and Davis is Lucky

The Union-Tribune: Davis must go
and Arnold the Outsider

Long Beach: Recall Davis, Elect Arnold

Talk about out of step with your readership!

It's one thing to be out of step with your readers, it's another thing to be out of step with your taxers!

I tell them I no longer consider them a credible source of information.
