In the early 1900s, organs were the must-see/ must-have rage amongst the moneyed set, especially for their summer homes in Massachusett's North Shore. The Kennedy Center organ is one example, having come from the Filene home. You might have seen Henry Clay Frick's magnificent, albeit much smaller, organ at his home on 5th Ave. in NYC.

In those days, having the biggest organ was like having the biggest screen TV on the block. Just good old American one-upmanship.

Btw, I'm much amused and most proud of FR that this thread has turned into a serious discussion. Freepers aren't always so obvious as a big organ joke...

Best bet is try to buy a used one, or build your own.

New pipe organs are about 20K a rank--rather pricey.

Actually, you CAN get used pipe organs quite cheaply, but dismantling, installation, etc. can be quite time consuming.

signing off--have to travel 100 miles to fix a pipe organ in Cheyenne tomorrow morning

I'm privileged to have encountered all of you. Pipe organs, theatre and concert, are my passion as far as music is concerned. I'm always on the look-out for new recordings or transcriptions that meet quality standards. And, of course, I keep an eye out for those special talents who can translate Bach, Widor, and Franck, as well as the modern theatre organists who can slam the "El Relicaro"s and "Veradero"s for today's audiences.

I'll keep you guys on my e-mail list, if you'll do the same for me.

Necessity is Godmother of invention.

coolest pipe organ ever was the bamboo organ in the Phillippines--true.

I have a book about making your own organ that shows how to make pipes out of rolled PAPER!! I made a couple, and indeed they did "speak."

Enjoyed all your comments. I am very pleasantly surprised there are so many Freepers knowledgable about pipe organs! Bach, Widor, and Franck definitely rule! ......especially Bach!!!

Well, now that I've inadvertently united all the organ lovers of FR, I guess I'll turn in for the evening, feeling a warm sense of fulfillment that new friendships were blown through the shiny pipes of brotherly affection, in a swelling orgy of harmony. May your thoughts and love of the majestic organ resonate unto the climax of the fugue.

Thank you, and good night.

About a decade ago, there was a historic find of a well preserved baby wooly mamoth in Russia. The animal was complete with hair and internal organs. It was exhibited around the world and I saw it on display in Houston.

In one case, separate from the body of the beast, was a mamoth penis.

Around this time, I also knew a girl who had a one-eyed snake.

I swear that I'm not making this up! Honest!!!

The article is in Oct, 6 Forbes Magazine.

I'll post a link below to a better article. What a great success story.

Jasper Sanfilippo paid for the organ with shelled peanuts!

A lot of attention has been focused on the Kennedy organ. It only makes sense that someone here would have seen it.
