I think a lot of folks are more surprised about who wasn't a Stasi spy. There is a growing feeling that eventually when all the records in public domain...we will find dozens if not hundreds of West German politicans who were on the take. This is something that both political parties fear may come out in the end.

Actually, this is what they did. Say you were on their "watch list" and were seen dining in a restaurant. Upon your exit they would take a cloth and place it on the chair you were sitting on and cover it with a jar. After a period of time they would then put the cloth in the jar, seal it, and then label it as belonging to you. It would then be warehoused.

I'm serious! I am not making this up.

Of course, Witt wasn't involved with anything so brutal. Her deal with the Stasi was simple: If they gave her a Volkswagen Golf, renovated her parents' apartment and let her skate in the West, she would gather information for the Stasi, promise not to defect, and use her beautiful image to obscure the reality of her country's gruesome regime.

That sounds good in theory, but what did the hundreds of hormonally and genetically modified brutish female weight lifters etc., do for their gruesome regime? She must have been doing more.

Kinda makes me wish I knew a secret that she wanted........

Touche! We are all products of our environment to one extent. I never jumped on the bandwagon condemning everybody from Meryl Streep to the Dixie Chicks for their political views.
