"Self-supporting monasteries, the Oneida and Amana communities being the notable examples of successful small-scale communism.)"

You left off the earliest such American group---the Shakers.

make "every adult responsible for bringing in some cash." ... all residents must work.

What a concept. I wonder ... if it might work ... on a national level? * hums "Age Of Aquarius *

If you examine their website, these hippies have a plan for spreading their "philosophy". For a hundred and a half, you can go spend the weekend with them.

"It's always been difficult to pin down what we're about and what we believe in."

That's because they're not about anything and they don't have any beliefs.

amazon.com has it.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/offering/list/-/1558150102/all/ref=dp_pb_a/104-6892521-6385567

Look up: Failed Utopias in the amazon.com search box. It is a depressing (to me it was) book. Just because people are so stinking gullible (as in the horse in Animal Farm way).

There is a long history in the US of successful communes, though most of them were religious based. One that turned extremely profitable was Oneida. They became the Oneida Silverware Company. Not bad for some freaks in the woods, but they did go into the commune with the notion ahead of time that everyone was going to work 24/6. &, of course, was the Lord's day.

Jamestown was founded as commune, with everyone entitled to an equal share of the production no matter what they did. Of course, it was a horrific failure until everyone was assigned an equal sized plot of ground and told that 'come next year, you pay six bushels of wheat or you get corporal punishment.'

That made Jamestown a great success of practially overnight.

But they are sure that the rest of us are wrong.

To: and the horse you rode in on

That’s ridiculous. I lived there for a bit and sure they turned culture on it’s head a little, but it’s not anything like a cult. It’s just a bunch of old hippies living on a communal plot of land.
