Nice post. But it isn't that way in the Marines. Segregated training, markmanship training and repeated combat training cycles for all hands regardless of job or sex. The Marines have not forgotten what it is they do. Locate, close with and destroy the enemy. The Marines understand that sometimes in war, the cooks, mechanics and pogues gotta fight. They better be ready.

When basic training was all-male, it was pretty rugged It still is, for 11-bang-bangs. Go spend a week at Sand Hill if you doubt me.

He addresses that in his article.

I find it curious that the author of this article has Pfc. Lynch singled out, but not the other soldiers in her unit. Was she the only one in the ambush?
To: mrs tiggywinkle
She's the only one getting so much attention.

Agreed...I just wish attention would be given to the other soldiers in her unit as well.

This is on the NCOs
I had a platoon sergant in RVN who was all business..
we came of any patrol ..long or short ..didnt matter...
The first order of business...before chow before letters before medical calls
was cleaning weapons...and..
they were inspected and recleaned if necessary...
NO acceptions..
Once they passed inspection then...you got chow mail etc..
He was one of the best imo and thanks to him and his discipline
a lot more guys got home in one piece than would have under more
"liberal-enlightend" leadership

I can't believe the Company Commander didn't face a Court Martial for Derelection of Duty for this fiasco. The First Sergeant didn't survive the ambush, but the non-map-reading REMF CO did.

You'd think so. ; )
(Ping to a couple of guys.)
To: mrs tiggywinkle
Well, she's the only one who has been mentioned to have a non-functioning weapon (i.e. she didn't maintain it or anything and the thing jammed when she needed it), and with all the attention on her, well, that's the breaks I guess...

I've read articles stating other soldiers were having difficulty with their guns as well. In addition, there was a sandstorm going on, which further added to the difficulties. It wasn't only Pfc. Lynch.
To: Chad Fairbanks
Further, many soldiers and marines had difficulty keeping their weapons perfectly functioning during the sandstorms.
To: mrs tiggywinkle
I didn't say it was only her - however, since she is now the only media star/pop icon/book deal receiving survivor of the ambush, well, she's going to have to accept a certain amount of singling out - I mean, they've been singling her out for everything else, so why not this?

Well, as soon as you point me to massive media stories and book deals involving those sodliers and marines, then maybe I'd see your point. However, Jessica Lynch has been elevated above everyone else, so she will now undergo closer scrutiny.
Them's the breaks.

I read the articles on FR. There were quite a few as I recall, all depicting conditions and challenges with equipment/weapons.
Pfc Lynch has not elevated herself..the media has done so. She has a book coming out to tell her story and has hired an attorney to protect her and her story...so that no one will succeed in twisting the truth anymore than the media already has.
I need to get busy with my day...I'll check back later.

(You KNEW this was coming) ...
If the US Army replaced the mattel poodle shooter with a decent rifle the cleaning issue would be much less critical. Think the rag-heads shooting at our guys are worried about keeping their AK's clean. Hell no! They don't need to because an AK is about as delicate as a spud bar. While there were at it they could get a decent round for desert warfare, like the 7.62 Nato. In other words, bring back the Garand.
OK, flame away! I've got my kevlar shorts on.

I read the articles on FR. There were quite a few as I recall, all depicting conditions and challenges with equipment/weapons.Well, ya know, Lynch was mentioned as a prominently recognizable example of what the author was describing. I suppose the article would have been better if every single sodier/marine/airman/sailor was mentioned? That would be a looooong article, if so.
Pfc Lynch has not elevated herself..
Well, I never said she did. I said she was elevated, which would indicate that some other entity did the aforementioned elevating.
the media has done so. She has a book coming out to tell her story and has hired an attorney to protect her and her story...so that no one will succeed in twisting the truth anymore than the media already has.
Well, I've never been too happy with the media coverage of her and the ambush and all the hoopla surrounding it. So, I don't think we disagree with that. However, since she IS a media figure now, with a story people are fascinated with, she's going to be used as an example in news stories every so often. Goes with the territory.
