Flurry,

On another thread, ladtx posted the link to WSM Online.
They're playing his music today; thought you would be interested.

I loved living in Nashville. It was one of the best times in my life. I had everything right there.

If you went there as a tourist and did everything expected as a tourist, you could meet a lot of the Country and Western Stars at their museums.

If you're living there, it's difficult to bother someone you admire while they're in a restaurant trying to get something to eat like everyone else.

Johnny Cash has his house right on the Cumberland River and by law, you can tie up your boat and fish off of his dock. I found out about this when I was some yards off of his dock in my boat. The thought of me intruding on someone's property like that sort of horrified me. I couldn't imagine anyone doing something like that.

I couldn't make it as a paparazzi photographer.

Copied from a post by huck on the other Johnny Cash thread...

"That Ragged Old Flag"

I walked through a county courthouse square

On a park bench, an old man was sittin there.

I said, "Your court house is kinda run down,

He said, "No, it will do for our little town".

I said "your old flag pole kinda leaned a little bit,

And that’s a ragged old flag you got hanging on it".

He said "have a seat", so I sat down,

He said, "is this your first visit to our little town"

I said, "I think it is"

He said "I don’t like to brag, but we’re kinda proud of

"That Ragged Old Flag"

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,

When Washington took it across the Delaware.

It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it, writing

"Oh Say Can You See"

It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson

tugging at its seams.

It almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag,

But she waved on tho.

It got cut with a sword in Chancellorsville,

Got cut again at Shiloh Hill.

There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,

And the south wind blew hard on

"That Ragged Old Flag"

On Flanders Field in World War I,

She took a bad hit from a Bertha Gun,

She turned blood red in World War II

She hung limp and low by the time that one was through,

She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent

by her Uncle Sam.

The Native Americans, The Black, Yellow and White

All shed red blood for the Stars and Stripes.

And here in her own good land,

She’s been abused, burned, dishonored, denied and refused,

And the very government for which she stands

Has been scandalized throughout out the land.

And she’s getting thread bare, and she’s wearing kinda thin,

But she’s in pretty good shape, for the shape she’s in.

Cause she’s been through the fire before

and she can take a whole lot more.

So we raise her up every morning

And we bring her down slow every night,

We don’t let her touch the ground,

And we fold her up right.

On second thought
I do like to brag

Cause I’m mighty proud of

"That Ragged Old Flag"

The Man in Black

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, Why you never see bright colors on my back, And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone. Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read, Or listened to the words that Jesus said, About the road to happiness through love and charity, Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes, But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold, I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been, Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died, Believen' that the Lord was on their side, I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died, Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know, And things need changin' everywhere you go, But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right, You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day, And tell the world that everything's OK, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, 'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

"Once you see the video, you "get" the song."

First time we saw it, my Husband and I agreed, he's saying goodbye. The final sceen, closing the piano, to me, says it all.

When June Cash passed in May we knew it was only a matter of time before Johnny followed her... seems some couples are just like that.

My mom had a tape of his songs once, but I think we lost it in the last car we had...

So, yeah, I think I do.

When you get a chance tune your radio to a Country Western station. They will be playing a lot of his music for the next few days. If there isn't a local C&W station, get your folks to move ; ) A lot of C&W is very patriotic.
