Did you know of anybody who he was mentoring into this line of thought, and are those people still active in the movement? Is anybody else that you know personally currently advocating Paull Hill type actions? Do you know anybody who sent those death threats to Florida officials?

Now that's a quote. Check mate perhaps?

Not likely. Oh well. That quote pretty much sums up how I feel about this whole situation, taking out the idea that God's law should somehow be enforced as civil law.

Who decides which of the moral laws gets applied to non-believers and which do not? Why shouldn't everyone have to eat kosher? Why isn't everyone forced to go to church?

"People are getting away with the wanton and sinful mixing of milk and meat every day. They must be stopped. It is an affront to our God and his laws that such a practice is allowed to continue in these United States."

I'll be subject to God's law when I die. For now, I'm subject to the laws of the United States of America and the State of Ohio. I personally believe it is my own free choice to decide whether or not to hold myself to a higher standard of behavior than the government, and it ought to be everyone else's free choice as well. What good is my choice to not sin if I only do it because I might go to jail?

I thought I was the only PJ O'Rourke fan around these parts. Is the quote about dry counties one of his?

Since when do Conservatives advocate eliminating the rule of law? That is my question for all of you Conservative pro-lifers who want to string up some abortion doctors.

It's my pragmatic side coming out, but I wonder why Paul Hill didn't consider his own children when he committed murder. From the news coverage I've read, he didn't even tell his own wife what he was going to do. The children were quite young when he was arrested--3, 6 & 9, if my memory serves me correctly. Who supported these children? Hill didn't. Did his wife support them? Did she accept public assistance? Given that we have a maximum security prison in my city, I know that being an involved father is extremely difficult when the only contact is letters and infrequent prison visits (and very rare phone calls)--and from what I've read in the news coverage, Hill's wife lives in West Memphis, Arkansas, so prison visits would involve travelling long distances with young children.

Hill chose to make his wife a widow and his children fatherless. It was a very selfish act.

Maybe his surviving relatives got the same sort of assistance from private individuals that suicide bombers' families get in the West Bank.

BINGO! This is not uncommon, considering the help that guys like Nuclear Poodle and Eric Rudolph got from the fanatics of this cult. Material assistance, obstruction of investigations, disingenuity in public comments - all designed to obfuscate truth and to make strained living circumstances palatable.

Hmmm. I missed your answer. My simple answer..."two (or three murders) wrongs do not make a right."

From his attitude I don't think he thought of his family at all.He considers himself heroic. The fact that he did not help the pro life movement doesn't seem to register, either.

Hill murdered a man who was about to go into a clinic and murder more innocent children.

That's the function of the legal system - to report murderers to the police so they can be arrested, tried, and convicted. If the victim was truly in the process of murdering others, was he reported to the police by anyone? And that is the system we live under in the United States - if you have objections to such a system, then you should move to another country where murder is legal (good luck finding one, but that's neither here nor there).

Or are you seriously advocating that people who do things that you don't like can simply be gunned down on the street by anyone who might wish to? I can make a pretty convincing case that tobacco kills 500,000 Americans a year - by your logic, I can shoot any tobacco company executive, worker, truck driver, or store clerk that sells tobacco.

If that is your contention, then I have nothing further to say to you as you are advocating vigilanteism and anarchy.

In his mind, he was protecting the lives of these children. That's not murder in cold blood.

Sorry, but under our current system of laws, abortion is legal and the doctor was practicing a legal profession. If you don't like it, then get representatives elected that believe in the same thing you do and get the law changed. That really is the only option you have under the current system - murdering people in cold blood is NOT a viable option.

Your views on abortion are only relevant as it pertains to what you believe regarding when life begins. It is the whole crux of this discussion.

The original post was not addressed to me, so there is no evidence that the "whole crux" of the discussion was directed toward me personally, or to find out what my views on abortion are. Even if it were, my reply would be simply "none of your business."

P.J. is actually from Toledo, so he's one of us in that respect. If you mean around FR, there's a lot of us.

The quote is actually my own...I'll take your speculation as a complement. >:)

That's what happens when people start thinking that "God's laws" (as they interpret them) are more important than the laws of the nation. That's why some of us are so much against Roy Moore. It's a mindset that leads to Paul Hill, Eric Rudolph, Northern Ireland, Osama bin Laden, Hamas "suicide bombers", Baruch Goldstein, the RSS (India), etc. It's why the Framers wanted to make religion a matter of individual conscience, uncorrupted by the compulsory nature of government and unable to use its power.

Oh, I wouldn't doubt she got that kind of assistance, but I wonder if it's an income she could count on with any reliability. Perhaps now that he's dead she can apply for Social Security, at least for the younger two children.

In essence, Hill made her a single parent, at least on a practical, day to day level. Someone still had to put food on the table, make sure the children were clothed, educated, taken to the doctor and dentist, be comforted when they're ill, share in the little joys...and I wonder why he chose to miss out on major--and minor--events in the children's lives.

I lose my first husband when my daughter was young, and I can tell you that even though there were stand-ins for her father, she's told me (now that she's an adult), she wanted him there, rather than me saying, "I wish your father was here to see this." It's always been an empty spot in her childhood. In our case, we didn't have a choice when he died, but in Hill's case, he chose that path.

The fact that I find liberals, who are normally against the death penalty, celebrating this mans rightful execution.

Y'know something? You're right - no candlelight vigils by The Usual Suspects, no aggrieved former nuns writing books about The Unfairness Of It All, etc. Blatant hypocrisy is a pretty disgusting thing to watch when its beamed right into your living room by Dan Rather.

Whether you agree with him or not, it sure was nice to see someone with real convictions.

There he is. You may now genuflect if you want to. I'll just spit on my monitor a few times.

Go Bucks! Even though he did go to Miami of Ohio, he's still an Ohioan. That was a pretty good interview with the Onion, although he's referred to repeatedly as right wing, which seems kinda unfair since he's pretty libertarian.

Re: Ray Moore et al- My favorite part of the whole event was showing the protestors. One of them was shouting, "Why do you hate God, you God-haters?" If someone wrote that in a movie, I'd say it was sloppy writing, but an actual human being came up with that. Classic. The scary part about the whole incident is the lack of understanding people had of the issue, and the poll that showed like 90% in favor of keeping the Commandments in the courthouse. I wonder how many more Paul Hills and Eric Rudolphs there are waiting in the wings.

Another point you bring up intereste me as well: which version of Christianity is the United States going to follow if we adopt this as our state religion? Would it please the religious if we followed Roman Catholicism, since that is the largest denomination? Who has the right version? As a Catholic with some understanding of history, theocracies are one thing I think we all want to avoid.

One more question for everyone: how could anyone, even the most fervent pro-lifer, justify the killing of the bodyguard? He wasn't going to kill babies. And if Hill really believed he was going to die and be rewarded, he should have welcomed being shot by the bodyguard. He seems to be forgotten in all of this. That right there was a cold-blooded murder, plain and simple.
