The concept of "war" is certainly not limited to guns and ammo--and, when you think about it, it's really one of the underlying theses in the area of "marketing."

The purpose of "marketing" is to take away a profitable 'territory' from a competitor--whether it's teeny-boppers/clothing, or the Lincoln/Caddy conflict.

The Red Chinese (among others) figured out that a significant dislocation of workers and professionals in the USA WILL have a significant impact on the strength of the country, both monetarily and in will/resolve. It certainly is not making Bush's job any easier, is it?

The fact that the Fed and State Gummints in this country made it easier is very significant, as you point out.

But it does NOT change the basics on the thesis that this writer proposes: there's a war, and we are losing.
