For example, did the administration have any real alternatives to hiding reports about the bad quality of New York air?

I haven't been following this story because the true story doesn't usually come out until weeks later, and is then buried on page A-9 beneath the fold. But if it turns out that the Bush Administration actually lied to the American people, I would have a problem with that. That was one of the articles of impeachment against President Nixon. I'm not saying that telling the truth in this case didn't come with its own risks, and I'm not saying I know what I would do in the same circumstances. But I am saying we need to be able to trust government reports.

As much as I am in favor of this war against terror currently being fought in Iraq, finding out that the White House is a liar would bring everything they have said up for new scrutiny.

Shalom.

How, for example, is "national security" served by telling Americans that air is safe to breathe when it is not?

Oh, my gosh!. Tell you what, MR THOMPSON, how about you stop breathing, to set the example for us, since you believe the air is not safe to breathe?

"Who says our government hid ANYTHING from us? Oh, wait, I see: it's you."

Hmmm. I guess you haven't read the articles about this. I didn't say it, Nikki L. Tinsley, EPA Inspector General, said it. And the Bush administration hasn't denied it. Perhaps you should read carefully before you accuse me of making things up?

And the Bush administration hasn't denied it.

If the Bush administration gave daily denials on subjects that are only political time-bombs, the news briefings would be even more caustic than they are today.

Are you saying you won't believe anything until you hear Bush say it?

What about the old adage that issuing a denial only gives your detractors more ammunition?

It's always interesting to watch how people here react when someone like Thompson doesn't march in lockstep to their views. Suddenly, he's a leftist and shill for DU. Guess nobody read his column about Hillary's book on June 12, the one that read (in part):
A lot of people who should know better are wringing their hands over two recent, laughable books that attempt to gloss over the many sins of Bill Clinton during his two terms as President of the United States.

Former Presidential advisor, and known liar, Sid Blumenthal’s The Clinton Wars attempts to reinvent history in ways extreme even for the former left-wing “journalist” known as “The Squid.” Right on the heels of this ludicrous attempt at fantasy comes former First Lady, and current U.S. Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Living History, a pathetic attempt at self-denial that would make even a hardcore heroin addict blush.

Both books attempt, in vain, to rewrite history. Bill Clinton’s scandal-ridden eight years in the White House serve as a political case study on wretched excess, abuse of power, politics of self-destruction and outright criminal activity. He stayed in office only because the bumbling idiots who tried to bring him down were so inept they couldn’t have convicted Adolph Hitler of war crimes.

Blumenthal’s tome, thankfully, is on a fast-track to the bargain book table, not generating enough sales to pay for beer and cigarettes, but we’re not so lucky with Hillary’s illusions. An instant best seller, chalking up 200,000 copies out the door on the first day, Living History will keep her on the talk show circuit for weeks to come and send Clinton haters scrambling for anti-acid pills from now until doomsday.

I don’t know which is more pathetic: Hillary’s meandering, lame excuses for the actions of her philandering, serial-liar husband; or the public’s continued fascination with these two ambulance chasers who should have lived out their lives in a double-wide in some Arkansas trailer park.
Or his column today about the Democratic candidates for President, which says (again in part):
A recent survey of Democratic voters in this country shows most can't name even one of the many candidates seeking the top job. Not one. Nada. Zip.

And why should they? The current crop of Democratic candidates for President reads like a catalog of has-been, once-was and never-will-be.

According to polls, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean leads this cast of unknowns. Howard who? Exactly. Most people can't find Vermont on the map, much less tell you who served as governor.

Dean is an unabashed liberal whose sole claim to fame while in office was the legalization of civil unions, which made it legal for gays to marry in Vermont.

While that platform might get him elected mayor of San Francisco (and invited to a lot of Hollywood parties), it ain't the kind of populist position that carries one to the White House. Dean also opposed the war in Iraq when other Democrats either supported it reluctantly or avoided the issue altogether.

Next we have Senator Joe Lieberman, the same Joe Lieberman who ran for vice president in 2000 with Al whats-his-name, Bill Clinton's vice president.
A lot of you say you quit reading because he wrote something you didn't like. Big deal. From reading Thompson over the past several years, I've come to realize he doesn't play favorites. That's why I keep reading.

You think he's crossed over to the other side, but he gets trashed as much at DU as he does here. I doubt they would agree with the opinions expressed here, even if he has been critical of Bush, Ashcroft, et. al. Let's remember that Capitol Hill Blue was one of the leaders in exposing Bill Clinton for what he was, including uncovering the rape of an English girl while he was at Oxford.

It would be good for us to remember that real journalists don't take sides. And when they make a mistake, they step forward and admit it (as Thompson did). I respect that. It is a shame that others here do not.

"What about the old adage that issuing a denial only gives your detractors more ammunition?"

Come on. This administration absolutely blasts attacks people who get it wrong. From everything I've read, it appears that what this guy from the EPA said is essentially the truth.

What amazes me is the number of Freepers who are willing to say something like, "Oh well, what could we have done even if they had told the truth, evacuate New York?" In other words, it doesn't matter. Sorry folks, but I think it does matter. All administrations should be held to the same high standards.

About time someone tells it like it is. The administration is a fraud just like the last one. Can't believe anything they say.

Two words about Kinsley:

CLINTON NOMINEE

I think anything she says should be taken in light of that. Other Clinton nominees and appointees have deliberately worked against the Bush administration, and I don't doubt this woman is doing the same.

Doug Thompson prints a pack of lies, and that makes it "truth"? Some Clinton toadie makes a bunch of claims, and that makes it "truth"?

Now, who's the gullible one? Did you also buy Thompson's last big lie, too? You know, the one he had to print a retraction about? When it comes to the Clintons and their minions, if their lips are moving, you'd better get proof before you believe it.

Okay, so they said the truth, if that is what you want me to believe.

How does that make the Bush administration any different than Clinton's? Before you answer that, tell me honestly if you see them both as moral equivalents. Because, if you do, I don't know why you aren't calling for Bush's impeachment!

Echo Hillary, if you like... "WHAT DID HE KNOW, AND WHEN DID HE KNOW IT?"

Police artist sketch of D.U. Thompson's "unnamed source".

D.U. Thompson, soprano diva in the Clinton Castrati Choir, renders her version of Hitlery! Mein kopf ist du tu Busch!.

This is a further attempt by the Pantsuit Putsch to jangle car keys and distract baby from the treason of Clinton & Clinton.

Two damning books now state what Freepers (and Robert Baer, and Bill Gertz, and Lt. Col. Robert Patterson et al) knew:

Osama bin Laden, perpetrator of WTC I, Mogadishu, Khobar, Dar es Salaam, Cole and September 11, was freed by the Clintons.

Not once, not twice, but three times; so says the new Posner book and the new Richard Miniter, Losing bin Laden.

Hitlery! screams of "air quality at ground zero"--but who, pray tell, is responsible for ground zero?

Hitlery!

Yes, D.U. Thompson, something is rotten in the state of Denmark (Chappaqua), and it is She Who Must Be Oy-Veyed:

I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic!
We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration!

Regarding the bottom Hillary quote... it is hysterical to hear it on high speed when Limbaugh plays it. Shillery, indeed!

This is an administration that cynically used public fears from the 9-11 terror attacks for political gain,...

There are only two words that come to mind: kool aid.
