I just got back from the "Big Party" thrown by Harley Davidson to conclude the weekend celebrating their 100th B-Day. There were a couple hundred thousand people at the park along the Lake Michigan lake front tonight waiting for the unnanounced big surprise headliner at tonight's concert. Rumors were circulating about 'The Rolling Stones', U2, Willie Nelson and Bruce Springstein. Instead the Harley folks brought out Tim Magraw for about 60 mintes, Kidd Rock for about 15 mins then Elton John. Everyone was already bored by Tim 'who even likes country music in the biker crowd' MaGraw and let down than Kidd Rock played for such a brief time when Elton 'Gay, Overweight, Romantic, Englishman' started playing. Within 15 mins tens of thousands of people were leaving. The street in front of the park was jammed with dissapointed concert goers from all over the country who were bitching and complaining for the mile walk back to their bikes and cars. Harley Davidson created one of the biggest marketing disasters I have ever seen.

Elton John represents Harley? I don't think I'll ever see a macho looking Harley rider again without snickering a little.

Was this your post on Yahoo Stocks message board for HDI?

I have been making a ton on HDI in the last month. I bought it in early July expecting a runup with the hot sales and this party.

Elton John? Maybe for Disney's 100th, but Harley?

I figured it would be Montrose, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros, etc. HARD ROCK or SOUTHERN ROCK.

I disagree Tim Mcgraw is biker friendly. Some of his songs sound Southern Rockish. Everybody knows that Lynyrd Skynyrd would have pleased the masses.

Apparently Harley actually made real motorcycles for one little stretch of three or four years during WW-II when the US government forced them to produce imitation BMWs for couriers. The entire rest of their history has been spent making those idiotic long-stroke 45-degree V twin monstrosities.

I saw one of HD's 100th Anniversary kickoff events in CA last year, and the acts were Earl Scruggs and The Doors.

I couldn’t believe they had Elton John at the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Party! A gay man playing a Yamaha piano, which the cameraman did a great job of focusing in on. It made me wonder if Yamaha and Harley were merging, or was one buying the other out? What will be next - a pink Harley for 2004? Elton is way beyond his prime compared to 25 plus years ago. It was also surprising that the surprise entertainment was not of USA origin. Along with most others we expected to rock out - not rock to sleep.

The worst marketing decision was the production of the water cooled Porche designed Harley. It is selling for 80% of sticker price purely based on want ads where there are are lot of "don't wants" selling their iron.
